Primary Purpose

The Lactation Consultant position skillfully provides direct patient care and consultation services for breastfeeding support in accordance with professional nursing standards. The consultant assesses, teaches, and evaluates lactation education programs to childbearing clients, their families, and appropriate HC staff. They assist mothers in increasing breastfeeding skills, attain lactation goals, serve as a lactation resource for hospital staff, students, and community members, and design and deliver education programs.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles and respond to specific patient issues.
  • Apply competencies for infant (0‑12 mo), toddler (13 mo‑4 yr), adolescent (13‑17 yr), young adult (18‑34 yr), and adult (35‑65 yr) populations.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a plan of care for patients experiencing lactation difficulties.
  • Conduct bedside lactation rounds daily and document all interventions.
  • Utilize effective teaching methods based on adult learning principles.
  • Assist parents and families in understanding alternatives to meet lactation goals and communicate with the health team.
  • Develop and conduct competencies, workshops, and in‑services for staff, reinforcing current trends in lactation.
  • Assist breastfeeding mothers in other hospital areas as needed.
  • Review, evaluate, or revise departmental breastfeeding policies using evidence‑based principles (AWHONN, IBCLC, ACOG, HUMC).
  • Participate in daily discharge teaching classes in collaboration with the Mother/Baby RN.
  • Promote awareness of HUMC rental station in the Woman’s Gift Shop.
  • Perform additional duties such as assignment in the nursery or covering newborns on overflow units.
  • Attend yearly International Conference to maintain certification and inform leadership of trends.
  • Maintain mandatory education requirements for the medical center.
  • Identify needs of the patient population served, modifying and delivering care accordingly.
  • Adhere to standards identified in the Medical Center’s Organizational Competencies.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an NLN/AACN accredited nursing program.
  • Minimum 5 years of Maternal & Child Health or Nursery experience as a staff nurse.
Licenses & Certifications
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP).
  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License.
Compensation

Starting at $ annually. Post‑dated salaries may vary based on market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, location, internal equity, and budget factors.
