Overview

Provides basic level pre-hospital emergency medical care as defined in NJAC 8:40. Under direction, drives or rides an ambulance to provide emergency medical assessment, treatment, and non-emergency interfacility transportation. Administers treatment at the scene and en route to the hospital and adheres to all NJ Title 39 Motor Vehicle Codes and Regulations.

What you will do
  • Performs daily equipment, vehicle and radio checks to ensure equipment is present and working.
  • Answer all calls for emergency medical treatment or non-emergency interfacility transportation as dispatched.
  • Drives ambulance, obeying all motor vehicle laws, and parks in a safe location.
  • Determines the nature and extent of injury by performing a complete assessment and establishes priorities for emergency care and transport needs.
  • Administers emergency care such as airway management, ventilation, and CPR.
  • Seeks to stop bleeding, treats shock, immobilizes fractures, and provides initial care for poisoning and burns.
  • Identifies medical information to guide emergency care.
  • Assists in extrication of patients from entrapment and coordinates with the dispatcher for additional resources as needed.
  • Prepares victims for transport and provides continuous care en route to the hospital; on arrival, transfers care to ED staff and documents the patient’s condition.
  • Maintains patient care reports and daily logs; learns and uses agency information systems.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of basic emergency medical and first aid principles and patient handling techniques, including safe lifting with a partner up to 300 pounds.
  • Maintains composure in emergencies and adheres to safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Continuously assesses and documents the patient’s condition during transport.
  • Reads, writes, speaks, and understands English sufficiently to perform duties (ASL or Braille may be considered acceptable forms of communication).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Experience Qualifications
  • Emergency driving such as CEVO or EVOC required.
  • ICS 100, Haz-Mat and WMD Awareness preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills (high proficiency).
  • Ability to remain calm and think clearly during stressful situations (high proficiency).
Licenses and Certifications
  • EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification (NJ) upon hire; or EMT-B certification as applicable.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire required.
  • National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians – Basic (NREMT-B) current and valid upon hire required.
  • Driver License valid in New Jersey; in-state license upon hire required.
  • A trauma course such as PHTLS or BTLS preferred.
