The Patient Care Technician functions as a caregiver for a specific patient population to achieve desired outcomes. Under the direction and supervision of the registered nurse, promotes patient satisfaction, comfort and safety. Assists with a variety of patient, unit and environment-related tasks and participates in patient safety initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care based on physical, psychosocial, education, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of the guests/patients served in assigned service
  • Ensure effective and safe patient outcomes through practice, judgment and critical actions; maintain ongoing communication with patients, nursing colleagues and other health care team members regarding patient status and care
  • Take initiative to go beyond what is expected, improving job performance and creating new opportunities
  • Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration of the patient's plan of care from admission to discharge to ensure safe transitioning and continuum of care
  • Participate in Unit/Department Performance Improvement activities
Specific Job Functions May Include But Not Limited To
  • Welcomes patients and checks for proper identification bracelets
  • Prepares the patient for assessment/admission, physical examination and procedures
  • Recognizes and responds to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill to provide care appropriate to age of patients on the unit
  • Obtains clinical data (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, O2 saturation) and documents findings; notify RN of abnormal results
  • Draws intravenous or capillary blood with proper aseptic technique; labels and processes specimens to expedite throughput
  • Performs venipuncture for laboratory tests
  • Follows through with collecting, labeling and transporting specimens accurately and on time
  • Performs EKGs as directed
  • Ensures presence, functionality and cleanliness of equipment; checks code cart, O2 and other emergency equipment
  • Applies bandages, slings, compression boots and hypothermia blankets as directed by RN
  • Assists in transporting patients to departments or units upon request
  • Assists with patient meals and feeding as needed
  • Checks inventory and restocks as directed
  • Prepares rooms for admission and provides direct hygiene and comfort care (bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, bed making)
  • Assists with dressing/undressing and manages patient belongings per property checklist
  • Performs and documents glucose finger sticks and collects other specimens as directed
  • Provides post mortem care where applicable
  • Obtains and documents patient weights, intake and output
  • Maintains a safe patient environment by answering call lights promptly and communicating with RN for any condition change
  • Delivers care tailored to the patient's age, culture, language, hearing/visual needs, and development level
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned

Qualifications Education, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Required
  • High School diploma or GED; or equivalent
  • Completion of one of the following programs or equivalents:
    Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Technician, Fundamentals of Nursing, HMH PCT Apprenticeship Program, or equivalent medical background (e.g., EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA, CNA). Candidates not yet completed may enter the HMH PCT Apprentice Program with potential transfer to PCT after apprenticeship
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing patient needs, strong accountability, teamwork, ongoing education, and commitment to high-quality patient care
Education, Knowledge,

Skills And Abilities

Preferred
  • Experience or certification in phlebotomy and checking EKGs, vital signs, and blood glucose
  • At least 1 year PCT or CNA hospital experience or eligibility for the PCT apprentice program
  • Completion of a PCT program including phlebotomy, EKG and nursing assistant training
Licenses And Certifications Required
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS/HCP) within 60 days of start
Compensation

Minimum rate of $21.40 hourly. The posted rate is a minimum base pay estimate; total compensation includes additional rewards and may vary by market and other factors.
