The certified Sterile Processing Technician within the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) performs all tasks associated with the processing of surgical instruments and medical devices including cleaning, decontamination, assembly, sterilization/high level disinfection; monitoring of environmental conditions, sterilization processes, and HLD processes; assembly and dispatching of case carts and emergency carts; and inventory and ordering of SPD supplies.

• Assist in processing of instruments, surgical trays, and surgical case carts. Perform duties in the Processing area. Maintain knowledge of instruments and trays and assemble trays and sets as detailed on set layout sheets. Operate all machinery associated with the Decontamination and Processing area and identify problems that affect product quality.
• Check expiration dates on sterile items and take appropriate action if outdated items are found.
• Demonstrate proper phone etiquette and use proper procedure with callers on the business unit and OR Hotline phones in a courteous and efficient manner.
• Make daily soil rounds in the medical units, visiting all required areas and return all items to SPD for processing.
• Perform functions in Decontamination area, cleaning instruments, trays and carts. Perform decontamination duties without direction and control workflow.
• Record all processed loads and keep accurate records, including Biological indicators. Place Biological indicators into the proper incubator and remove them after the required period, recording outcome.
• Manage SPD department stock: put away supplies and rotate stock as needed.
• Assume daily operations of the business unit in the Supervisor’s absence and assign team members appropriately.
• Assume daily operations of the business unit in the Coordinator’s or Supervisor’s absence (Technicians with charge responsibilities).
• Operate steam and Sterrad sterilization equipment in compliance with manufacturer instructions, policies, procedures and Infection Prevention.
• Lifts a minimum of 30 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands for the duration of the shift.
• Other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Education,

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

• High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), or equivalent program.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.

• Experience with STERRAD sterilization.

• National Certification:
  Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPDT).

Lifts a minimum of 30 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs., and stands for the duration of the shift.
