The Pathologist Assistant assists pathologists with autopsies and surgical specimens, including the clerical and technical collation of clinical data prior to examination.

Responsibilities
  • Assist, under the supervision of the pathologist, in selection, preparation, and dissection of surgical tissue sections for routine microscopic examination, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, and other specified studies.
  • Assist in photography and gross description of surgical specimens.
  • Ensure accuracy of surgical specimen patient information and gross descriptions.
  • Assist in the selection and preparation of tissue sections for intraoperative consultations (frozen section), including embedding tissue, cutting tissue on a cryostat, and staining slides.
  • Procure fresh tissue samples for biorepository tissue banking, ancillary studies such as cytogenetics, flow cytometry, and/or snap freezing for therapeutic and research purposes.
  • Utilize the Faxitron to obtain X‑ray images and send them to the PACS system.
  • Perform proper maintenance of equipment, manage supplies, and maintain cleanliness required for gross anatomic dissection.
  • Assist the pathologist in preparing materials for both intra‑ and interdepartmental teaching exercises.
  • Perform all computer system functions necessary to achieve timely reporting of results.
  • Assist support staff and/or pathology residents with post‑mortem examinations, including photography, external examination, situ inspection, evisceration, dissection, data recording, and related tasks as directed by a pathologist.
  • Perform other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adhere to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree from a NAACLS‑accredited institution in Pathologists’ Assistant with training that includes didactic lectures and on‑site clinical training in anatomic pathology (surgical and autopsy), OR U.S. or accredited foreign medical graduate (MD) with or without ASCP‑PA certification and 5+ years grossing experience, OR Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences or related biological discipline with 8‑10 years experience as a PA (historic/grandfathered).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite).
Education, Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Preferred
  • Master’s Degree.
Licenses and Certifications Required
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification preferred; certification eligible. On‑the‑job training as a PA in a hospital laboratory performing technical duties related to anatomic pathology with documented competencies in prosection of simple to complex specimens.
