Job Description
Sr. Medical Laboratory Scientist – Hackensack, NJ – One weekend a month, rotating shift as needed (6:30 am – 3:00 pm). This hospital‑based position at Hurley Medical Center (HUMC) requires advanced clinical laboratory expertise, leadership of complex testing, and close collaboration with clinicians and vendors.
Responsibilities- Demonstrate all characteristics of a Medical Technologist I and II.
- Apply evidence‑based criteria to correlate and interpret laboratory testing data.
- Perform clinical validation to optimize laboratory testing as directed.
- Act as a technical subject‑matter expert, solving complex instrumentation and assay issues.
- Serve as a technical resource, investigating and resolving analytical testing problems, and responding to non‑routine/complex inquiries from clients and sales representatives.
- Provide technical direction to team members on all testing matters.
- Assume a trainer and SME role in education; design and implement training material and evaluate technical competency of staff.
- Apply QC theory and policies, interpreting trends and variables for continuous improvement.
- Review requests for validity checks, recommend actions considering specimen limitations and testing impact.
- Expedite workflow to maximize productive capacity by evaluating production systems and coordinating resolution of production problems involving other laboratory departments.
- Ensure compliance with departmental policies and federal, state, and local regulations.
- Participate in special projects as assigned and perform other duties as directed by the Supervisor.
- Minimum 5–7 years of clinical experience with at least 2 years in a similar department.
- Preferred 8+ years of experience in the same department.
- BS in Medical Technology (preferred) or BS/BA in Chemistry, Biology, or a related field; or an associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology. Previous qualification as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493 is acceptable.
- Foreign‑educated candidates must provide a credential evaluation from IERF; U.S.‑educated candidates must provide an original transcript.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, ability to prioritize tasks, and coordinate resources to meet departmental goals.
- Technical proficiency with instruments, troubleshooting, and assay implementation.
- Ability to withstand prolonged periods of sitting or standing.
- Maintenance of patient confidentiality at all times.
- Ability to handle multiple procedures simultaneously, manage time effectively.
Pay Range: $33.00 – $54.45 per hour. Successful candidates may be eligible for an annual performance bonus.
