Medical Laboratory Scientist II - On Call - Hematology
Join Quest Diagnostics as a Medical Laboratory Scientist II in Hackensack, NJ. This is a hospital-based, on‑call position, covering every other weekend from 10:30 pm to 7 am. The role requires performing moderate to high complexity test procedures with independent judgement and responsibility within your area of qualification. You will support the quality control, troubleshooting, instrument maintenance, staff training, and process improvement initiatives of the department.
PayRange
$30.01 – $49.50 per hour. Salary offers are based on relevant skills, training, experience, education, certifications, and organizational factors.

Responsibilities- Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and troubleshoot applicable instruments and procedures.
- Support quality control, troubleshoot complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects.
- Perform and report assigned analytical tests according to SOPs, ensuring quality control requirements are met.
- Comply with laboratory policies for specimen handling, testing, reporting, and record maintenance.
- Adhere to analytical schedules to meet turnaround times for STATS or critical results.
- Track reagent and kit expiration dates and perform QC analysis to ensure accuracy of clinical data.
- Inform supervisory personnel of problems related to test procedures and report deviations from standard practices.
- Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for physician review.
- Maintain a safe, functional, and sanitary laboratory environment.
- Complete training and competency checklists as required.
- Assist supervisors with training of other personnel.
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and work‑practice controls.
- Answer client or lab personnel questions as needed.
- Participate in government or regulatory inspections.
- Assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor when qualified.
- Perform any other duties assigned.
Required Work Experience
- One (1) year full‑time experience or training in high‑complexity clinical laboratory testing.
Preferred Work Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years clinical experience with the most recent year in the current department.
Physical And Mental Requirements
- Lifting: 1–10 lb frequently; 11–25 lb occasionally; 36–50 lb seldom; >50 lb requires assistance.
- Ability to stand and work at the bench for prolonged periods.
- Frequent walking or standing.
- Use of manual and automated pipettes and instruments demanding fine dexterity.
Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge of the specialty area.
- Knowledge of department policies and procedures.
- BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology; or an Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or prior qualification as a technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433.
- Foreign‑educated candidates must provide IERF credential evaluation; U.S. candidates must provide original transcript.
- State‑specific testing certifications may apply.
