Overview

Position Summary:Performs journey-level diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of gasoline, diesel, and electrically powered equipment requiring application of thorough mechanical knowledge and skills to solve most technical problems independently. Performs mechanical work on most of the Port's light equipment. Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on support equipment systems: mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair Port motor vehicles and heavy construction equipment, including gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment such as light trucks, forklifts, manlifts, earth-moving equipment, and landscaping tools.
  • Ensure the cleanliness and safety of the work environment in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Assist with maintenance of port facilities, generators, pumps, engines, compressors, etc., as required.
  • Ensure all the working areas are safe in condition.
  • Ensure all equipment repairs are completed in a safe manner, following all proper procedures.
  • Perform weekly inspections and maintenance of all port vehicles.
  • Maintain and update all maintenance records on vehicles and heavy-duty equipment.
  • Prepare requisitions for approval when parts, supplies or materials are needed for repairs; track inventory level of spare parts to ensure availability when needed.
  • Provide cutting and welding services required to maintain and repair equipment.
  • Schedule routine vehicle and equipment maintenance with different departments.
  • Ensure all vehicles comply with state vehicle safety laws.
  • Instruct personnel on the safe operation of equipment.
  • Able to operate equipment such as Forklifts, Manlifts, Earth-moving equipment, as well as landscaping equipment.
  • Serve as a Line Handler for inbound and outbound ships on a “watch bill” basis.
  • Other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or higher authority.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records and documentation.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and safety protocols.
  • Willingness and initiative to learn and adapt to assigned tasks.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge, including familiarity with gasoline and diesel engines
Qualifications and Experience
  • High School Diploma, or equivalent required.
  • Mississippi Driver’s License required.
  • 3-5 years of related mechanical experience preferred
  • Experience with gasoline and diesel engines.
