The Sterile Processing Technician provides sterile instruments and decontaminated, safe equipment for patients of all ages under the supervision of a Patient Care Manager/Coordinator or Chief Technician. He/She cleans, disinfects, assembles, packages and sterilizes surgical instruments; tests, operates and monitors sterilization equipment; documents and maintains sterilization records; assembles surgical supplies; and decontaminates, disinfects and distributes patient care equipment.
Responsibilities- Provide sterile instruments and decontaminated, safe equipment for patients of all ages under supervision.
- Clean, disinfect, assemble, package and sterilize surgical instruments.
- Test, operate and monitor sterilization equipment; document and maintain sterilization records.
- Assemble surgical supplies; decontaminate, disinfect and distribute patient care equipment.
- Verify and assure accurate patient charges; order patient equipment and supplies; operate computer equipment to meet patient supply needs, respond to patient charge inquiries, and post/credit charges.
- Demonstrate knowledge of sterilization supplies and requirements, equipment and instruments; understand handling of items with varying compounds, textures, or quantities; transport and dispose of hazardous materials and sharp objects per hospital procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of sterilization procedures for various equipment and instruments; knowledge of wrapping and repackaging sterilized instruments.
- Use sterilization equipment and instruments; arrange instruments on surgical trays; follow written instructions and perform multiple tasks; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
High School diploma required or GED equivalent. Knowledge of medical terminology essential.
CertificationCertification recommended within two (2) years of employment.
ExperienceCentral Service, OR Instrument/Supply and computer entry experience preferred.
Physical DemandsStands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs, and uses many physical motions in day-to-day activities. Must be able to stand for extended periods and walk extensively. Must have a high energy level and handle high-pressure situations. Must possess sufficient strength to operate sterilizers, push carts, and lift instrument trays up to 25 lbs regularly and up to 30 lbs occasionally. May be exposed to communicable diseases and toxic fumes.
Must wear gloves and protective clothing for prolonged periods.
Keen mental faculties, sound judgment and decision-making skills for preparation and sterilization of surgical instruments and monitoring of computerized sterilization equipment. Must perform with a high degree of accuracy and maintain effective working relationships with peers, managers, physicians, and other health care workers.
Special DemandsMust be able to function unsupervised in a highly conscientious manner. Must be able to set priorities, pay close attention to details, and be adaptable to change.
