Responsible for assisting physicians/providers with patient care, rooming patients, and performing clerical, environmental, and organizational tasks. Responsible for appointment scheduling and chart management. Provides information to patients so they may fully utilize and benefit from the practice services. Conveys a positive image of the practice.

Responsibilities
  • Performs patient care responsibilities as assigned, including identifying self to patient/family and explaining roles of care team; accompanies patients to exam/procedure room; prepares patients for visit (vital signs, measurements, specimens where applicable, phlebotomy where applicable, INR where applicable, pulse oximetry, spirometry, etc.); documents medical and surgical history, family history, social history, problem list, and medications in EPIC; performs screening per physician/provider guidelines;

    assists physicians/providers with procedures; obtains pre-authorizations when necessary; conveys instructions to patients/family/caregivers; provides appropriate resource materials and referrals; maintains patient records; manages EPIC in-basket; answers and returns calls promptly and provides pertinent information.
  • Performs administrative responsibilities as assigned, including sending/receiving patient medical records and abstracting new patient records into EPIC; obtaining lab/radiology reports, hospital notes, and referral information; completing forms/requisitions; cross-training on front desk duties (greeting patients/visitors, answering calls, scheduling appointments, maintaining/scanning patient medical records).
  • Performs environmental responsibilities as assigned, including setting up instruments and equipment per department protocol; applying infection control principles; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment between patient visits; cleaning the sterilizer (when applicable) per scheduled maintenance program and maintaining documentation; ordering, sorting, and storing supplies per department policy.
  • Performs other related organizational duties as assigned, including maintaining patient autonomy/confidentiality/dignity; ensuring providers submit timely and accurate billing; maintaining knowledge of practice policy, HIPAA, current coding, OSHA and CLIA regulations (where applicable); providing prompt attention to urgent and non-urgent patient issues; escalating problems to supervisor; collaborating with Care Coordinator for Patient Centered Medical Home initiatives; attending and participating in staff meetings;

    contributing to programs and activities for individuals, families and populations to promote health and prevent disease; contributing to quality improvement and evaluation activities; advocating for vulnerable individuals and populations; fostering a learning-oriented work environment; pursuing continuous quality improvements; interacting effectively with diverse populations; coordinating efforts to gain patient and family feedback and participating in interventions addressing articulated needs.
  • May assist and/or perform chaperone duties for patient medical procedures as needed.
  • May perform other duties as required.
Qualifications

Education
High School diploma or equivalent required. Must meet one of the following requirements: graduation from an accredited medical assistant (MA) certificate program or Phlebotomy program, certification as a certified nursing assistant (CNA), emergency medical technician (EMT), or paramedic. Employees who join YNHHS through a merger or acquisition may satisfy educational requirements by demonstrating the appropriate combination of education, relevant experience, and current competencies.

Experience
Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a medical assistant (MA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), emergency medical technician (EMT), ambulatory care associate (ACA), patient care associate/technician (PCA/PCT), paramedic, or phlebotomist required. New graduates from an accredited medical assistant certificate program, with less than one (1) year of experience, will be considered.

Licensure
Certification/registration (CCMA/CMA/AAMA/RMA) preferred. Certification/registration may be accepted in lieu of graduation from an accredited MA school. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred.
