BASIC FUNCTIONReporting to the Manager of Health and Safety, the Health and Safety Trainer is responsible for the development, implementation and ongoing management of safety related training in all areas of the organization. The Health and Safety Trainer works closely with departments to promote a strong safety culture, and ensures employees are equipped with the necessary knowledge, skills and awareness to maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
PRINCIPALRESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Manager of Health and Safety, the Health and Safety Trainer has the following duties and responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Health and Safety Specialists and stakeholders to determine training needs including delivery format.
- Assist with and consult on hazard assessments to ensure appropriate integration with training plans.
- Develop and maintain a training matrix to account for all positions and required safety training.
- Determine training courses to be delivered externally and identify approved training courses/vendors to ensure legislative compliance.
- Develop internal course outlines and content as appropriate and in alignment with legislative requirements.
- Conduct corporate training as needed including creating a positive and interactive learning environment to encourage employee participation and skill development.
- Determine course refresher requirements and schedules and monitor and report on compliance.
- Maintain records of employee safety training.
- Audit and report on safety training completion for all areas of the organization.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of safety training programmes and implement improvements as needed.
- Lead the coordination and tracking of annual emergency drills.
- Foster a strong safety culture by promoting continuous improvement, active communication, and a shared commitment to safety.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Two-year college diploma in human resources, occupational health and safety, health sciences or a related area.
- Certificate in Adult Education or willingness to obtain.
- Minimum four years of experience or equivalent in a related area, with public sector experience preferred.
- Experience designing and delivering training for adult learners, including planning, delivering and assessing training, is required.
- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Employment Standards Act and Ontario Human Rights Code.
- Current certification in relevant safety training programmes (eg. JHSC, Working at Heights, Confined Space, WHMIS, First Aid/CPR) is an asset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent team-work skills combined with a willingness to learn and a continuous growth mindset.
- Excellent presentation and facilitation skills.
- A valid driver’s licence (minimum G2 Class) and access to a reliable vehicle.
