What is the opportunity? Being a Building Operator at an RBC Enterprise Data Center offers a unique opportunity to play a critical role in maintaining the backbone of RBC’s digital infrastructure. In this position, you’ll ensure the reliability, efficiency, and safety of state-of-the-art data center facilities, directly supporting the bank’s mission-critical operations. You’ll work with cutting-edge technology, from advanced HVAC and electrical systems to sophisticated monitoring tools, gaining hands-on experience in a high-stakes, fast-paced environment.

What will you do?Here are the 5 top accountabilities for a Building Operator at an RBC Enterprise Data Center:
  • Ensure Continuous System Uptime
    Monitor and maintain critical infrastructure (HVAC, power distribution, fire suppression) to guarantee uninterrupted operation of data center facilities, aligning with RBC’s zero-downtime objectives.
  • Proactive Maintenance & Troubleshooting
    Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and rapid diagnosis/resolution of mechanical, electrical, or environmental anomalies to prevent failures.
  • Environmental Control & Efficiency
    Optimize temperature, humidity, and airflow via Building Management Systems (BMS) to protect IT hardware while maximizing energy efficiency (e.g., tracking Power Usage Effectiveness/PUE).
  • Safety & Compliance Adherence
    Enforce adherence to RBC safety protocols, OSHA standards, and local regulations; conduct emergency drills and maintain documentation for audits.
  • Incident Reporting & Documentation
    Log all system performance data, maintenance activities, and incidents in real time; escalate critical issues and contribute to root-cause analysis reports.
  • These accountabilities ensure the operator safeguards RBC’s technological backbone while upholding operational excellence.
    What do you need to succeed?
    Must-have
  • Technical Ability/Proficiency in MEP Systems. Expertise in mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing (MEP) systems, including HVAC, power distribution, and fire suppression.
  • Demonstrated ability to be trained in technical processes and procedures. These can be specifically related to any MEP Systems, or other similar disciplines.
  • Analytical Problem-Solving Skills including the ability to diagnose system anomalies, read one-line and blueprint drawings, interpret data trends, and resolve issues under pressure.
  • Attention to Detail & Documentation including meticulous record-keeping and filing for maintenance logs, incident reports, and compliance audits.
  • Nice-to-have
  • Trade Certification in a designated and related field, such as electrician, mechanic, HVACR, or similar.
  • Certification in Building Management Systems (BMS)
    Training in BMS platforms (e.g., Schneider Electric, Honeywell) to monitor and control environmental conditions.
  • Data Center-Specific Knowledge
    Familiarity with data center standards (e.g., Uptime Institute Tier classifications, TIA-942) and critical infrastructure protocols.
  • Safety Certifications that might include basic first aid, construction safety or equivalent, training in confined space entry, fall protection, or emergency response.
  • Certifications in Energy Efficiency or qualifications such as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or LEED Green Associate who has learned to optimize, improve sustainability and reduce operational costs through energy reduction/conservation.
