Position: Student Advocate Humber ONLY) - Start Date TBA

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Student Advocate is a key contact and advocate for students at the University of Guelph‑Humber. The Student Advocate contributes strategically to IGNITE offerings and ensures the mission of IGNITE is being successfully implemented throughout their campus. They work collaboratively to advocate for the student body to various internal and external stakeholders.

RESPONSIBILITIES
ADVOCACY
  • Pursue advocacy initiatives aligned with the strategic plan as determined by the Advocacy Committee
  • Represents IGNITE and the student body at‑large on Humber/Guelph‑Humber committee meetings
  • Oversee IGNITE’s advocacy and outreach efforts for its domestic and international student membership
  • Actively seek out input from students and provide leadership to IGNITE by advancing the implementation of strategic objectives and goals of the organization
  • Be knowledgeable and involved in IGNITE’s Equity and Sustainability action items
  • Be the first contact with the College Student Alliance and work towards transforming student concerns into feasible changes at the institutional level
ENGAGEMENT
  • Participate in student outreach initiatives, empower students and build community on Humber College and University of Guelph‑Humber’s campus by advocating for student rights, supporting student groups, events and initiatives, and providing opportunities for social impact
  • Always present themselves in an appropriate manner, which reflects IGNITE, Humber College and the University of Guelph‑Humber students at large in a positive manner
  • Create an open and consistent student feedback loop
  • Engage with equity‑seeking student groups and create outreach initiatives to gather feedback to better improve their student experience
  • Participate in assigned committees
ADMINISTRATION
  • Respond to e‑mails, phone calls and online interactions from students, co‑workers, and partners;
  • Answer student journalism students by email or by informal interview
  • Develop an effective and appropriate continuity plan for the incoming Student Advocate
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must either be a current Humber ITAL or the University of Guelph‑Humber IGNITE fee‑paying student at the time of application
  • Must commit to full‑time hours throughout their contract (35 hrs)
  • Ability to think strategically, formulate and execute plans to meet organizational goals
  • Excellent problem solving and decision‑making ability
  • Ability to work effectively in a high‑pressure environment and oversee multiple projects

DAY IN THE LIFE - STUDENT ADVOCATE TASKS & FOCUSES
  • Once arriving to the office, we review emails and any tasks that may have been pending from the day before
  • Have checklist of advocacy plans that is currently in motion
  • Go through any steps and/or contacts that should be reached to ensure our advocacy plan is a step closer daily
  • Have meetings with admin about certain issues and advocacy plans
  • Meetings with equity committees to ensure representation across the campuses
  • Planning equity events throughout the year
  • Meet and chat with students about any concerns they may have
  • Research processes and advocacy’s plans across other campuses and stay updated with ministry of colleges and universities
  • Keep up to date with all events occurring across all campuses and GH
  • Setting goals for every quarter to ensure advocacy plans are met and up to standard
  • Be the daily student voice for all groups
  • Stay up to date with GH APR program and the music APR program
