Job SummaryMust be skilled in collection and processing of all laboratory specimens for testing and able to perform waived testing under direct supervision. Performs a variety of pre‑analytical, analytical and post‑analytical tasks in the laboratory. Aids in supervisory activity for a lab section. Evaluates specimen acceptability, enters patient and test information into the computer and responds to requests for information from customers.
Utilizes all necessary computer systems and is proficient at reviewing documentation for accuracy.
- Collects and receives samples for testing, verifies proper patient preparation, sample collection, and transport requirements.
- Ensures Standard Precautions and personal protective equipment are used for all specimen collection and processing.
- Communicates effectively between the laboratory, clinical services, and physicians.
- Leads quality, lean, and process improvement activities.
- Provides clerical assistance for billing, troubleshooting, data gathering, and verification of lab orders and labels.
- Reviews and utilizes computer systems and documentation for accuracy and efficiently solves problems for assigned section.
- Performs other duties as assigned and complies with Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Minimum Education
- High School Diploma, GED, or Associate’s degree (preferred).
- BLS (Basic Life Support), ARC‑BLS (American Red Cross Basic Life Support), or BLS‑I (Basic Life Support – Instructor).
- Certifications:
CPT (Certified Phlebotomy Technician), CPT‑P (Certified Phlebotomy Technician – Provisional), MLT(ASCP) (Medical Laboratory Technician), MLTASCP‑P (Medical Laboratory Technician – Provisional).
- ASCP, AMT, NHA, NCCT, ABB, NPA within 6 months of hire (180 days).
- Specific Phlebotomy certs: PBT (ASCP), RPT (AMT), CPT (NHA), NCPT (NCCT), CPT‑PBT (ABB), CPT (NPA) required within 180 days.
Minimum 3 years of experience in any laboratory field.
Required Minimum Skills- Knowledge of laboratory and hospital regulations.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and make immediate decisions.
- Laboratory technical skills for pre‑analytical, analytical and post‑analytical tasks.
- Leadership ability for assigned areas and effective communication skills.
