Job SummaryThe Clinical Pharmacy Manager will identify, develop, implement and monitor clinical pharmacy programs for their respective Well Star Hospital. They will supervise clinical pharmacists, PGY‑1 residents, and clinical dietitians, coordinate clinical pharmacy activities, develop strategies to improve therapy outcomes while reducing costs, and provide educational opportunities to enhance clinical knowledge of pharmacy personnel. The manager will comply with WHS, federal, state, and local laws and regulatory standards such as TJC and Medicare.
CoreResponsibilities and Essential Functions
- Coordinate and supervise the clinical pharmacy program for the Well Star Hospital.
- Responsible for day‑to‑day clinical pharmacy operations.
- Develop and implement new clinical pharmacy programs to enhance patient care.
- Develop and implement a training program for pharmacists in clinical practice including nutritional support, anticoagulation management, and pharmacokinetic dosing.
- Supplement clinical functions during pharmacist vacations, vacancies, or increased patient load.
- Counsel or take disciplinary action when clinical pharmacy personnel violate established policies.
- Interview, hire, and train clinical pharmacists and dietitians.
- Interface directly or through representatives with Medical Staff on selected topics (Cardiology, Oncology, Nephrology, Pulmonology, Anesthesiology, Antimicrobial Stewardship, etc.).
- Provide or delegate responsibility for in‑service education for pharmacy personnel, nursing, and ancillary services.
- Assist in reviewing adverse drug events, including reactions and medication errors.
- Assist in preparing therapeutic interchanges for use during medication shortages.
- Coordinate the clinical portion of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, develop drug monographs, MUE data, guidelines, and therapeutic interchanges.
- Assist in developing clinical rules for the computer system (e.g., CPOE).
- Review and assess software for clinical pharmacy program implementation.
- Attend meetings with pharmaceutical representatives to discuss product use.
- Ensure clinical compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and the Georgia State Board of Pharmacy.
- Assist the Director of Pharmacy (DOP) in writing and implementing department policies and procedures.
- Develop and administer a pharmacotherapeutic strategic plan to reduce costs and provide quality care.
- Monitor expenses to identify deficiencies or excesses.
- Assist the DOP in preparing annual operating and capital budgets.
- Educate facility clinical staff on the appropriate utilization of medications.
- Assume responsibility and work independently on special projects assigned by the DOP or senior management.
- Establish work schedules to meet staffing needs.
- Perform annual evaluations and appraisals for clinical pharmacists, PGY‑1 residents, and dietitians.
- Conduct and document regularly scheduled clinical staff meetings.
- Represent the Pharmacy Department on Well Star Health System committees (Medication Use, Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Medication Performance Improvement, Infection Prevention, etc.).
- Assume other responsibilities as required to maintain high‑quality clinical pharmacy services.
Minimum Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or Doctorate in Pharmacy (preferred).
- Registered Pharmacist (RPH).
- Three (3) years’ experience in a hospital pharmacy.
- One (1) year in a supervisory capacity within a hospital pharmacy or two (2) years in a clinical or community setting.
- Knowledge of hospital financial systems (general ledger, P&L statements, budgeting, billing).
- Preferable experience with automated dispensing systems.
- Knowledge of computerized hospital pharmacy systems.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities.
- Ability to supervise both professional and non‑professional employees.
- Ability to work with other hospital departments and managers.
- Ability to converse and work with Medical Staff.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong customer‑service attitude.
- Capacity to think and act independently as required by situation.
