Position OverviewReporting to the Engineering Manager, the Senior Application Engineer serves in multiple roles as a valuable member of the Systems team. This position will work in many functions of project delivery including detailed design engineering, concept engineering, project execution, integration support, and sales consulting for our automated solutions.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the solution design for conveyor, sortation, pallet handling, AS/RS, and robotic systems
- Specify system components needed to meet the customer objectives, i.e., the correct type of sortation, conveyance, AS/RS, robots, etc., based on throughput requirements, storage capacity needs, material to be handled, etc.
- Develop all required mechanical drawings for proposals and projects; plan view drawings, elevation view drawings, installation drawings, throughput models, etc.
- Create detailed system proposals, inclusive of preparing cost estimates, soliciting pricing from suppliers and sub-contractors, and generating detailed proposal documentation
- Prepare and support sales presentations, illustrating system design concepts, throughput rates, equipment specifications, etc.
- Generate system bill of materials, spare parts lists and order equipment and services for projects
- Continually establish and maintain relationships with equipment suppliers and sub-contractors to support development of designs, pricing and delivery schedules
- Creates detailed description of operation documentation, for use by the site operations and maintenance
- Act as a mentor, inclusive of leading technical reviews of proposals and projects to ensure quality and accuracy, as well as leading internal training classes
- Participate in visits to customer facilities, as needed to document existing conditions, as well as identify opportunities to improve, expand or upgrade systems
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Minimum 15 years of experience in the material handling industry
- Minimum 5 years of experience creating material handling system drawings in AutoCAD or equivalent
- Experience with automated sortation technologies (shoe, crossbelt, tilt-tray, MDR transfers)
- Experience with AS/RS mechanical design (shuttles, cranes, lifts, racking interfaces, load-handling devices)
- Experience with robotics integration (AMRs, robotic picking, palletizing/depalletizing)
- Experience with automated pallet-handling equipment (conveyors, transfers, turntables, lifts)
- Experience developing complex proposals and cost estimates
- Proficiency in 3D CAD (Solid Works, Inventor, Creo, or equivalent)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
- Strong knowledge of industrial safety standards (ANSI, OSHA, RIA, CEMA, ISO)
- Strong understanding of industrial control concepts (PLCs, VFDs, WCS/WMS, HMIs, Ethernet/IP, Profi Net, Modbus)
- Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings (single-lines, I/O, panel layouts)
- Strong project engineering and cross-functional coordination skills
- Ability to act as a subject matter expert for internal teams and customers
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
- Detail-oriented, process-driven work style
- Effective organizational skills and ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects
- Self-starter who performs well under pressure
- Experience in manufacturing or warehouse process optimization
- Experience with Hytrol conveyors and HyCAD
