The Equipment Mechanic / Diesel Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining company‑owned heavy equipment, diesel‑powered trucks, and related construction machinery. This role ensures fleet reliability, safety, and compliance while minimizing downtime across underground utility and construction projects.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on diesel engines and heavy equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled services on trucks, trailers, and construction equipment.
- Repair and service heavy equipment, including excavators, directional drills, skid steers, loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, and support vehicles.
- Troubleshoot engine performance issues, brake systems, transmissions, steering, suspension, and fuel systems.
- Inspect equipment for safety hazards and compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records, including parts used and labor hours.
- Respond to breakdowns in the field as needed to minimize operational downtime.
- Order parts, manage inventory, and coordinate with vendors as required.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop environment.
- Follow all OSHA, DOT, and company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support operations.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of diesel and gas engines and heavy equipment systems.
- Proficiency in diagnosing hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical issues.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic data.
- Strong attention to detail and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Effective communication skills with supervisors and operations staff.
- Commitment to safety and quality workmanship.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as a diesel mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic (construction environment preferred).
- Experience working on underground utility or excavation equipment is highly preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required and must be insurable; CDL preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen and background check
- ASE certifications or manufacturer certifications are a plus.

- Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, crouch, and work in confined or outdoor environments for extended periods.
- Ability to work in varied weather conditions.
- Manual dexterity to operate hand and power tools.
- A combination of shop and field work at active construction sites. Exposure to noise, grease, dust, vibration, and heavy machinery. May require early mornings, overtime, or on‑call availability based on operational needs.
