Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Operations Supervisor, the Operations Officer is a technical and compliance driven position that is responsible for maintaining airport safety, security and operational efficiency. This position is responsible for conducting inspections of the airfield, terminal facilities, and other District facilities/property, and takes corrective action on any unsafe or hazardous condition. This position also provides continuous monitoring of airport activity and responds to incidents and emergency events as required to provide necessary support.

Responsibilities

(Essential Functions)
  • Coordinates airport operations during assigned shift, ensuring the safety and security of the public, tenants and airport staff.
  • Responsible for dispatching, monitoring, and coordinating radio communications with emergency personnel. Processes emergency telephone and other incoming phone calls.
  • Monitors the Airport Security Access Control System (ASACS) to include closed circuit cameras for entry to the Airfield Operations Area (AOA).
  • Monitors intrusion alarms, fire alarms, screening point alarms and any other alarm that may require an emergency response.
  • Performs criminal record check queries via the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) and/or the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS).
  • Responsible for maintaining current knowledge of all Greenville-Spartanburg Airport District rules, regulations, policies, procedures, directives, etc.
  • Provides input and feedback on policies, procedures, practices, etc. governing the operation of the Department.
  • Conducts inspections of the airfield, terminal facilities, and other District facilities/property, and takes corrective action on any unsafe or hazardous condition.
  • Coordinates with the Facilities Department on airfield repairs, airfield lighting, janitorial, and maintenance of airport facilities and grounds.
  • Under direct supervision, performs duties to ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations, and other local, state, etc. regulations, pertaining to the Operations Department. Regulations will include but are not limited to, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), 14 CFR Part 139, 14 CFR Part 77, and 49 CFR Part 1542.
  • Assists with airport security and identification functions, including badging, training and testing airport employees on movement area operating procedures, etc.
  • Under direct supervision, assists in coordinating and monitoring construction activities.
  • Under direct supervision, coordinates use of facilities by air carrier operators, air cargo operators, military and charter aircraft operators.
  • Monitors and ensures safe vehicle operations on movement and non-movement areas.
  • Under direct supervision, implements wildlife control procedures and ensures compliance with the District’s Wildlife Hazard Management Plan (WHMP) and applicable Federal and State regulations.
  • Under direct supervision, implements snow and ice control procedures and ensures compliance with the District’s Snow and Ice Control Plan (SCIP) for the airport.
  • Issues and files Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMs) to report all conditions that impact the safe operations of aircraft and ensures that they are promptly communicated to the FAA, air carriers and other airport users.
  • Enforces compliance with the District’s Rules and Regulations and the Airport Security Program.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in aviation management or a related field, preferred.
Experience
  • A minimum of one (1) to three (3) years’ work experience in the aviation sector or related field, preferred.
  • Police and/or Fire (911) dispatching, military or telecommunications experience, preferred.
  • Previous experience working with job‑related Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regulations, preferred.
  • Previous Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) experience, preferred.
