Position: Highway Maintenance Worker II-Medium Equipment Operator (61035871)

Responsibilities

  • Operates medium equipment such as skid steer and/or a tandem dump truck in conjunction with highway maintenance operations. Performs debris pickup and right of way vegetation management.
  • Conducts daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment and performs daily preventative maintenance to ensure lubrication, coolant and oil levels, hoses and belts are in good condition, tires are properly inflated, and no leaks are present.
  • Operates smaller equipment including brush chipper, chainsaw, dump truck, pole saw, snow plow, spreader, or tractor with mower; assists in heavy equipment operation such as a backhoe.
  • Reports problems to shop for repair and flags traffic, sets up traffic control devices such as cones and signs.
  • Operates portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges.
  • Assists in emergency and/or inclement weather operations, including extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
  • Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
Physical Demands

The physical demands for the essential functions involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
