Overview
Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in various duties such as the replacement of missing signs and damaged signs, and the installation of new signs and straightening of existing signs according to state specifications. Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks with trailers for hauling material and transporting equipment for maintenance and construction operations, and heavier equipment such as a motor grader, backhoe and specialized equipment for special projects and on-call related activities.
Serves as crew leader and performs skilled manual labor in the placement of thermo pavement markings such as stop bars, arrows, crosswalks, and railroad crossings according to state specifications. Inspects roads for missing and damaged signs, sign reflectivity, leaning signs and other safety hazards; picks up litter, debris, and dead animals. Assists with instructing crew members daily in safety practices.
Such as flagging operations, wearing of safety equipment, vehicle safety, or job site hazards. Sets up traffic control according to South Carolina Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Standards to warn motorists of road work ahead. Assists in producing daily records of work performed and materials used, records such as Highway Maintenance Management System and the maintenance requests and complaints forms.
Conducts safety inspection on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life. Operates both portable tank-mounted salt brine anti-icing equipment and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader to remove snow and ice from highways and bridges.
Assists Crew Foreman with managing assigned crew(s) in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include on-call personnel for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts in emergency or inclement weather operations. May include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.
- Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
