Position: Highway Maintenance Worker I - Small Equipment Operator (61032358)

Responsibilities

  • Operates a 5‑yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris.
  • Operates small equipment such as forklift, self‑contained sweeper tractor with broom, brush chipper, and snowplow attachment with sand spreader or brine sprayer applicator for removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges.
  • Performs manual labor in a variety of activities associated with construction, repair, and preservation of state highway roads and bridges.
  • Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones.
  • Serves as flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
  • Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights‑of‑way.
  • Operates heavier equipment such as front‑end loader, belt loader, backhoe, and tractor with ditcher.
  • Conducts and documents pre‑trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety.
  • Operates and maintains small equipment, power tools, and hand tools to perform a variety of highway and bridge maintenance activities.
  • Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations, which may include extended hours or 12‑hour shifts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification.

Necessary special requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. The successful candidate must attain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Demands

The essential functions involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. The applicant must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods and treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards are required. The position may necessitate working outside the normal scheduled work week, especially during inclement weather.
