Position OverviewUnder direct supervision, the Junior Soil Evaluator performs assigned inspections, evaluations, and complaint investigations for the Bureau of Regional and Laboratory Services Onsite Wastewater (OSWW) program. Develops advanced knowledge and understanding of the OSWW program.
Responsibilities- Conducts or participates in initial evaluations of proposed sites for the purpose of issuing onsite wastewater permits.
- Permits or participates in permitting suitable sites according to state regulations and policies. Requests second opinions from senior inspector as required.
- Conducts or participates in inspections of installed onsite wastewater systems to ensure compliance with state regulations.
- Assists with investigation of complaints, determines validity, makes recommendations for corrective actions, and takes appropriate enforcement action all in accordance with state laws, regulations, agency policies, and standard operating procedures.
- Performs other duties as required, which includes, but is not limited to, attending periodic staff meetings and training.
- A high school diploma or GED and experience in environmental health programs or radiological health.
- A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences, mathematics, public health, engineering or a related technical field may be substituted for the required work experience.
- Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

- Able to operate a manual soil auger to a depth of six feet.
- Must have valid state driver's license, and ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
- Able to provide outstanding customer service in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Work effectively in a team-oriented environment and encourage positive working relationships with coworkers, industry, and government officials.
- Work independently in a field environment.
- Ability to successfully complete prescribed technical coursework and pass any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period.
- Work in all reasonable weather conditions and access non-traditional work environments.
- Familiarity with onsite wastewater methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Training or experience in describing or classifying soils.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
