Overview
Performs periodic shop, yard, building, work zone, equipment, environmental, etc. inspections to ensure compliance with appropriate state and federal health, safety and environmental regulations. Conducts unannounced SCDOT Work Zone inspections of crews to determine proper compliance and guidelines are met according to the SCDOT Work Zone Maintenance Manual and MUTCD.
Responsibilities- Ensure all employees are wearing required personal protective equipment and that on-site documentation is properly completed.
- Assist the county safety representative in stopping/shutting down any unsafe activity until deficiencies are corrected.
- Instruct/facilitate Saluda and other counties employees in required health and safety courses (including CPR/First Aid, Flagger, Fall Protection, Excavation and Trenching, etc.).
- Investigate employee injuries and vehicle/equipment accidents to determine cause and recommend improvements for safety and accident prevention.
- Prepare all necessary paperwork, reports and Risk Management data entry (including OSHA 300/300s as required by Worker's Compensation and fleet management).
- Monitor organizational units CDL operations for compliance with federal, state and Agency requirements.
- Assist with CDL training in Saluda County and other districts as required.
- Conduct monthly safety meetings for Saluda and other counties and ensure all employees receive necessary material in a timely manner.
- Advise organizational leadership of uncorrected safety deficiencies and recommend methods of correction.
- Provide assistance with the Drug and Alcohol Program (e.g., post-accident, pre-employment, random testing) as needed in Saluda and other counties.
- Serve as a witness in hearings resulting from investigations as required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in occupational safety or industrial hygiene programs. A bachelor's degree in public health or a related field may substitute for the required work experience. A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. (NOTE):
This position requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position include bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. The role requires walking for extended periods, traversing rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and environmental hazards. May require working in an office, warehouse, and/or outdoor environment in all weather conditions.
May require working outside of normal hours, especially during inclement weather or other departmental-related emergencies. Travel as needed and assigned.
