Lead Mental Health Technician - Adolescent Unit (Full‑time)
Valle Vista Health System invites applications for a full‑time Lead Mental Health Technician to work 40 hours per week on our adolescent psych unit. The role includes overtime opportunities and shift coverage as needed.
Position SummaryThe Lead Mental Health Technician directly supervises and oversees Mental Health Technicians and Team Leads on the residential unit, providing orientation, ongoing education, competency monitoring, performance coaching, counseling and recommending corrective actions. The position requires strong communication skills and a proven track record of positive leadership.
Position Specific Responsibilities- Leadership
- Provide direction, education and in‑service to other employees regarding therapeutic services.
- Manage therapeutic space, supplies and equipment to maintain cleanliness, orderliness and safety.
- Deliver quality customer service when interacting with patients, families and hospital staff.
- Create a positive environment by problem‑solving unpredictable situations.
- Assume responsibility for Mental Health Technicians during assigned shifts.
- Supervise all activities of the Mental Health Technicians on assigned shifts.
- Serve as liaison between Mental Health Technicians and facility management.
- Assist in evaluating Mental Health Technicians as directed.
- Serve as liaison between Mental Health Technicians and House Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
- Participate in orientation/onboarding of new Mental Health Technicians.
- Implement established procedures for reallocating staff to meet daily needs.
- Project staffing needs for each shift based on acuity and special patient needs.
- Consult with management when staffing adjustments are indicated.
- Assist with hiring and recommend corrective action up to and including termination for Mental Health Technicians.
- Cover on unit as needed to maintain staffing ratios.
- Cover for acute MHT Supervisors when needed.
- Demonstrate responsibilities for observation and application of sound therapeutic practices for decision making.
- Consistently assess the milieu, including staff and patients, and identify proactive interventions for safety and therapy.
- Assess training needs of departmental staff and collaborate with Program Director and Training Coordinator to ensure training is met.
- Therapeutic Intervention
- Maintain awareness of individualized crisis plans and ensure consistent implementation.
- Utilize appropriate crisis intervention techniques consistently.
- Collaborate with the treatment team and attend weekly treatment team meetings as required.
- Milieu Management
- Understand the role of patient observation and ensure continuous patient safety.
- Understand treatment needs of special populations served.
- Understand age differences and corresponding developmental needs.
- Ensure consistent adherence to program schedule and provide input regarding program needs.
- Establish, maintain, and model professional therapeutic relationships.
- Apply de‑escalation techniques and manage patients using the least restrictive methods.
- Monitor and maintain patient safety, including policy and procedure adherence (e.g., body searches, room searches, activity transitions, active observation).
Education: High School Diploma
Experience: Minimum 5 years in milieu management; experience with specialized populations such as victims of human trafficking, LGBTQ+ youth, complex trauma, and substance abuse.
Skills/Knowledge: Knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques; understanding of mental illness.
Licensure: Valid driver’s license required.
