Attorney, Insurance Defense Overview
The James Allen Companies Inc has been engaged to identify a highly motivated Attorney with deep insurance defense and coverage experience to join a Risk Management and Insurance team. This position reports to senior risk leadership and will serve as a key legal partner supporting enterprise risk transfer strategy, captive program governance, and complex claims and litigation matters.
This Denver based opportunity operates on a hybrid schedule, currently three remote days per week. Competitive compensation, benefits, and an annual bonus opportunity are offered. The salary range for this position is $147,000 to $215,000 annually.
Key Responsibilities Risk Management and Insurance SupportProvide strategic legal guidance on insurance related risks, coverage design, and enterprise risk transfer strategies.
Develop and implement internal legal and compliance policies related to insurance.
Participate in audits, training, and risk assessments supporting compliance and claims best practices.
Serve as an officer of the captive, ensuring compliance and strategic effectiveness.
Advise on complex or high exposure claims, subrogation opportunities, and settlement strategy.
Provide legal opinions on coverage issues, claims, and related disputes under applicable state and federal law.
Advise stakeholders on coverage determinations, reservations of rights, denials, and related claims matters.
Represent the organization in coverage litigation and coordinate with outside counsel as needed.
Manage litigation as lead counsel, including case assessment, pleadings, discovery, depositions, expert coordination, and trial preparation and participation.
Draft, review, and update captive insurance policies, endorsements, and underwriting guidelines to align with risk strategy and compliance requirements.
Analyze and interpret insurance policies including general liability, professional liability, property, pollution, cyber, and other specialty lines.
Monitor legal and regulatory developments impacting coverage and ensure timely updates to policy language.
Partner with internal teams and external brokers and insurers to evaluate needs and maintain appropriate coverage.
Deliver presentations and represent the organization at carrier and broker meetings, board and client board meetings, internal presentations, conferences, and webinars.
Support loss mitigation and complex prevention efforts, including customer policy updates such as handbooks, regulatory impact assessments, and risk mitigation best practices.
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and admission to practice in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
10+ years of legal experience with a strong focus on insurance coverage law, ideally in house or with an insurance focused firm.
Deep knowledge of property and casualty insurance and related regulatory frameworks.
Strong legal writing, research, communication, and negotiation skills.
Highly organized with the ability to prioritize multiple internal customers.
Ability to meet deadlines under pressure, adapt to changing priorities, and maintain high productivity and accuracy.
Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a fast paced, service focused environment.
Ability to travel up to 25% for customer visits, litigation needs, underwriting meetings, and conference presentations.
