Position Reports To: Accounting Manager

Purpose of Position: Ensuring accurate financial reporting related to inventory, landed cost, cost of goods sold, and multi-state sales tax. This role manages detailed reconciliations, partners with supply chain and merchandising on inventory accuracy initiatives and leads all aspects of sales and use tax filings, audits, compliance, and nexus monitoring.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Inventory Accounting & Cost of Goods Sold

  • Oversee all aspects of inventory accounting including standard costing, landed cost, purchase price variance, shrink, defective allowances, rebates, and in-transit tracking.
  • Perform monthly inventory reconciliations, including GL to subledger tie-outs, aging analysis, and reserve calculations.
  • Manage intercompany transfers, eliminations, and cost allocations across 25+ retail locations and distribution centers.
  • Coordinate and supervise cycle counts, full physical inventories, and post-count analytics; ensure adherence to internal controls and SOX standards.
  • Prepare and analyze gross margin reports including SKU margin, freight impact, vendor programs, pricing accuracy, and store-level profitability.
  • Serve as the primary subject-matter expert for inventory questions from operations, supply chain, store management, and merchandising.
  • Evaluate inventory KPIs and partner cross-functionally on initiatives to reduce shrink, improve accuracy, and enhance reporting.
  • Lead the preparation, filing, and payment of all sales & use tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions.
  • Monitor state nexus, registration requirements, and tax law changes to maintain full compliance.
  • Review taxability determinations for products, freight, and customer types; ensure ERP tax configuration is accurate.
  • Manage all sales tax audits, coordinating with external auditors and internal teams.
  • Analyze and reconcile sales tax GL accounts, exemption certificates, and marketplace facilitator rules.
  • Partner with IT and ERP teams to ensure accurate tax calculation logic within Net Suite and POS systems.

Month-End Close & Reporting

  • Support monthly close activities related to inventory valuation, COGS, vendor funding programs, freight accruals, and tax liabilities.
  • Prepare journal entries, reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation for audits.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual audit requests.

Internal Controls & Compliance

  • Maintain and enhance controls in accordance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX).
  • Document processes and recommend improvements for inventory, sales tax, and procurement-to-pay systems.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, GAAP, and regulatory standards.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Operations, Supply Chain, Merchandising, AP, IT, and Tax advisors.
  • Support new store openings, system enhancements, product line transitions, and business model changes.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA or CMA preferred.
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience in inventory-intensive environments.
  • Strong knowledge of inventory accounting, COGS, and multi-state sales & use tax.
  • Experience with Net Suite, Avalara, or similar ERP/tax systems preferred.
  • Advanced Excel and data analytics skills.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
  • High attention to detail with strong problem-solving skills.
