ResponsibilitiesThe Physician Assistant (PA) or the Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The NP/PA, whether the practice setting is inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient, provides optimal patient care from diagnostic to prognostic matters. This individual works in collaboration with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s) in accordance with state law and hospital regulations, hospital policy, protocols and clinical pathways and may provide autonomous team-based care.
The NP/PA may obtain histories, perform physical examinations, review diagnostics, formulate and manage treatment plans. The NP/PA may perform procedures, prescribe treatments and medications in accordance with guidelines, and may have autonomous practice in certain populations. The NP/PA may also function as first or second assistant on operative cases within scope and prerequisites. Other clinical duties may be applied per departmental and operational goals, training, and responsibilities, including responding to emergencies within YNHHS parameters.
The NP/PA will educate patients/families on care and resources, and provide psychosocial support in collaboration with the supervising physician.
The NP/PA ensures appropriate documentation in accordance with hospital and regulatory requirements and protects information from unauthorized access or disclosure.
The NP/PA demonstrates professional behavior and ensures compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements and standards.
The NP/PA engages in projects to maintain and advance professional competency; may serve as a clinical resource or mentor; may collaborate on research and quality improvement projects.
Education
Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.
Experience
Prefer clinical working experience as an NP/PA within the given specialty/service line; not required. APRNs, PAs, CRNAs and CNMs must be appointed to the affiliated medical staff and credentialed. Evidence of current competence must be obtained during the Medical Staff appointment process.
Licensure
Active PA Certification (NCCPA), CT PA License, ACLS/BLS as indicated; DEA, PALS, NRP as required for position profile. RN/NP licenses and board certifications as appropriate.
