Overview

The Emergency Department Technician has the knowledge and ability to perform all duties as outlined in the Nursing Assistant job description in addition to responsibilities unique to the Emergency Department.

Major functions include coordination of the clinical care of the patient in collaboration with the Registered Nurse and multidisciplinary team. Assistance in the delivery of patient care and performance of duties include but are not limited to: obtaining vital signs and patient weights, performing and reporting 12-lead EKGs, blood glucose monitoring, room and environmental readiness, splinting and application of orthopedic devices, and all as delegated by the registered nurse.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the patient care unit and Nursing Department through the following activities:
    • Provides direct physical patient care following accepted procedures and in accordance with the department specific skills checklist.

  • Maintains a clean and safe environment in both patient rooms and nursing work areas ensuring that the department is always regulatory compliant.
    • Keeps work area safe and clean; keeps hallways clear.
  • Anticipates what services and information people need and takes action to provide it.
    • Watches for clues that patients or visitors require assistance. Escorts them to their destination, if necessary. Encourages people to ask questions.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient s requirements relative to his or her specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit s/area s/ Department s policies and procedures.
  • Document accurately, completely, and in a timely fashion in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Identify need to reorder supplies and coordinate with the Unit Secretary or Office Manager following established policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all nursing work areas and patient rooms are adequately stocked including all supply and equipment carts.
  • Obtain and record patient vital signs and weights as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
  • Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Physician, apply splints, orthopedic devices and perform crutch walking training.
