Job DescriptionThe Sustainment engineer is involved in a multi‑functional team on the hangar floor with coordinating the design, modification, maintenance, and repair of aircraft structures, mechanical systems, and mission equipment installations. The engineer applies basic engineering design and/or analytical theory with understanding of structural analysis for solving problems of various types and complexities. The role includes supporting the transition from engineering design to manufacturing, assembly and aircraft installation of designed products.
The engineer is expected to be decisive and manage multiple tasks at any time. This position includes application of principles supporting aircraft life cycle maintenance (assessment, repair, rework and designing replacement parts). Liaison/Sustainment engineers have the opportunity to work closely with several functional organizations on a wide variety of tasks and aircraft systems on various aircraft platforms. The engineer understands customer needs and is ready to communicate engineering rationale for decisions.
This position requires significant personal interaction with many diverse organizations (aircraft mechanics, manufacturing, program management, customer representatives and other engineering disciplines).
- Perform critical analysis: static analysis, Durability & Damage Tolerance (D&D), and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Coordinate design, modification, and repair of aircraft structures, mechanical systems, and mission equipment.
- Support engineering‑to‑manufacturing transition and aircraft installation.
- Assess, repair, rework, and design replacement parts for aircraft lifecycle maintenance.
- Collaborate across diverse teams: mechanics, manufacturing, program management, customer representatives, and engineering disciplines.
- Communicate engineering rationale clearly to stakeholders.
- Work in hangar and manufacturing environments; access confined spaces (fuel tanks, restricted areas).
- Walk flight line and maneuver on aircraft wings/fuselage with safety gear.
- Occasional overtime or off‑shift work may be necessary.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field (OR 6+ years relevant experience in lieu of degree). 2+ years relevant experience (0‑2 years with graduate degree).
- GPA: 3.0 or higher.
- Eligible for security clearance.
- Strong written/verbal communication and problem‑solving skills.
- A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or Materials Science Engineering is preferred.
- Microsoft Office proficiency.
- CAD experience.
- Prior mechanical/structural design or liaison engineering experience.
