Responsibilities- The Registered Nurse Medical/Surgical functions as a care provider of a multidisciplinary care team responsible for the delivery of patient care through using the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN prioritizes patient age and cultural diversity in the provision of patient care, demonstrates strong time management and prioritization, contributes to quality nursing care through performance improvement initiatives, collaborates with other professional disciplines, and supports the ministry mission to provide physical and psychological support to patients and families.
- In collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, establish goals and strategies for meeting discharge or continuing care needs with the patient. Perform and document complete patient assessments, initiate and maintain current nursing care plans for all assigned patients, identify patient learning needs for individualized teaching, administer medications safely in line with the State of Practice and Bon Secours Mercy Health policies and procedures, serve as a point of contact for care coordination, act as a patient safety advocate, and collaborate with spiritual care, palliative care, and ethics as a patient advocate.

- Current RN license in the state of employment or covered by compact (required)
- BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire; must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care; ACLS acceptable in lieu of BLS)
- Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification RN-BC (preferred)
- CCRN (preferred)
- PCCN (preferred)
- CMSRN (preferred)
- NIH Stroke Certification (preferred)
- Bachelor of Science Nursing (preferred)
- One year of RN experience (required)
- Six months RN experience in an acute care hospital setting (preferred)
- Assigns patient care according to the nursing skill, knowledge, and scope of practice of staff.
- Orients, facilitates learning experiences, and provides education to nursing staff and others.
- Demonstrates clinical knowledge and competency to provide evidence-based patient care per standards of practice, policy, and mission.
- Performs comprehensive assessment of patient condition and psychosocial needs; develops and prioritizes plan of care.
- Applies the nursing process in patient care delivery; assesses responses to treatment and revises the plan accordingly.
- Supports patients and families in coping with illness; collaborates with care teams for coordinated care.
- Exhibits strong interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills; applies cultural diversity and inclusion principles.
- Recognizes limitations and seeks information to perform safely; pursues professional growth through education and current literature.
- Demonstrates professionalism and accountability; uses resources cost-effectively and practices self-care and resilience.
- Protects safety and privacy of all persons; understands and utilizes office and clinical technologies.
Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. May be exposed to physical altercations, verbal abuse, restricted hazardous substances or body fluids, high noise levels, and bright lights. May require the use of physical restraints. May experience constant interruptions and periods of working alone.
