Position: DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF - 1225

Job Summary

Within broad parameters and in accordance with general organizational requirements and accepted practices, provides strategic planning and administrative support, manages daily operations, stakeholder relationships, and supervises staff. Assists in planning, directing, managing, and overseeing day-to-day activities and operations of the Fire Department including fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, rescue, training, accreditation, emergency management, and disaster preparedness. Participates in managing the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and priorities for each assigned service area and development of tactical objectives to reach said goals.

Recommends and administers departmental policies and procedures. Works with subordinate leaders to ensure department compliance with operational and safety standards. Assists in managing the day-to-day operations of the department to ensure continuity of operations between shifts and Administration. Works with the Chief of Training to ensure all personnel are trained and competent to execute all responsibilities consistently, effectively, efficiently, and safely with the department’s standard operating procedures for emergency services delivery.

Works with the Chief Medical Coordinator to ensure compliance with technical, administrative, regulatory, or professional standards and guidelines related to the department’s medical program and delivery. Works with the Accreditation Manager to ensure compliance with all accreditation standards. Participates in special projects and strategic initiatives, including the development and implementation of the strategic plan and long-term strategic initiatives. Assists with grant writing, grant management, and budget development.

Provides highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Fire Chief. Coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies. Supervises shift Assistant Chiefs, Chief of Training, Accreditation Manager and Chief Medical Coordinator. Works with the Fire Division Chief of Fire Prevention and Education and the Assistant Fire Chief of Administration to ensure the vision, mission, and goals of the Fire Department are met.

Serves on special committees and task groups as assigned by the Fire. Stays abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of fire suppression and training. Provides on-call support for major incidents, disasters, and special events. Serves as second in command to the Fire Chief and acts in his/her absence.

Essential Functions
  • 40% Lead and Manage Assigned Fire Department Operations: Provide the leadership necessary to meet the department’s current and long-range needs and goals. Assist in planning, directing, and coordinating through subordinate level staff and the Fire Department’s work plan. Assist in the day-to-day management of all Fire Department operations and activities including fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, rescue, training, accreditation and disaster preparedness.

    Collaboratively manage the development and implementation of departmental goals, objectives, and priorities for each assigned service area. Lead department efforts to improve efficiency through work assignments, reassignments, process improvements, and reorganization efforts. Establish within department and City policy appropriate service and staffing levels. Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures and allocate resources accordingly.

    Assess and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships. Identify opportunities for improvement, and direct and implement changes. Assign projects and programmatic areas of responsibility. Meet with key staff to identify and resolve problems. Direct assigned personnel and equipment at the scene of emergencies involving fire, all types of accidents, hazardous materials incidents, and lifesaving and rescue work.
