Job SummaryUnder the administrative supervision of the Director of the Counseling Center, the Counselor provides direct counseling services, including urgent care, and case management responsibilities to Furman University students, consultation to university faculty, staff, and students, and participation in the Center’s after-hours on-call rotation. This is a 12‑month position.
Responsibilities- Provides short‑term, direct counseling services to Furman University students through individual, group, and consultation sessions using the stepped care model.
- Provides clinical services that back up urgent, same‑day, and crisis situations at the center.
- Provides case management and referral support to students, communicating about cases with counseling center team, outside providers, and campus and community partners.
- Maintains client records (including intake summaries, progress notes, medical records, assessment screenings, and treatment summary sheets) in accordance with Counseling Center protocol and professional standards.
- Offers consultation to university faculty, staff, and students regarding mental‑health questions and concerns.
- Participates in after‑hours and weekend on‑call rotation for mental‑health consultation or crisis interventions.
- Collects and records statistical data on clinical severity indicators, client feedback, outcomes, and annual assessment measures.
- Assists in developing and delivering education/outreach programs on mental‑health and personal development.
- Serves on university committees and collaborates with campus constituencies while maintaining client confidentiality.
- Completes administrative tasks assigned by the Director and/or Associate Director.
- Adheres to the code of ethics and legal requirements for professional licensure in South Carolina, including ongoing continuing education and professional development.
- Undergoes performance review with supervisor to understand job performance expectations and university goals.
- Performs other duties assigned by the Director of the Counseling Center.
- Daily contact with own work unit and immediate supervisor to plan, coordinate, and problem‑solve.
- Daily contact with students, faculty, staff, and parents to influence, motivate, or persuade to achieve desired results, often involving disagreements or controversial matters.
- Occasional contacts with other professionals to coordinate and problem‑solve.
Director of the Counseling Center
Education and Skill Requirements- Minimum of a master’s degree in mental health counseling, clinical social work, or psychology, and 1–3 years of related experience.
- Licensed for independent practice as a mental‑health professional.
- Experience in direct mental‑health service.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to diverse, inclusive practices.
- Substantial experience working with diverse populations.
- Ability to collaborate with various units and committees.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Conflict resolution and mediation skills.
- Problem‑solving, multitasking, and leadership skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and operate within budget constraints.
The position is performed under usual office conditions. Availability for consultation or crisis intervention may be required after hours or on weekends.
