Position: Certified Sterile Processing Technician – St. Francis Downtown

Job Summary

The Certified Sterile Processing Technician, under general supervision, inspects, cleans, assembles, tests, and processes patient care equipment, supplies, and instruments according to established policies and procedures and manufacturer instructions for use. They act in accordance with sterility standards from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI), The Joint Commission (JCAHO), Center for Disease Control (CDC), and state practice standards.

Primary duties may vary depending on the area assigned.

Essential Functions
  • Performs decontamination functions including manual cleaning and processing of surgical instrumentation and patient care equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions for use.
  • Applies knowledge of detergents and chemical disinfectants for decontamination and removal of contaminants from contaminated surgical equipment; adheres to standard precautions while performing cleaning and sterilization duties.
  • Inventories, stocks, and delivers supplies, carts, and equipment to facility areas as indicated; orders, restocks, labels, and maintains inventory levels; rotates stock and inspects for outdates per market requirements.
  • Performs and documents quality control aspects of sterile processing using information technology systems focused on instrument tracking, surgery schedules, surgeon preference cards, and supply management; maintains comprehensive quality assurance standards for sterilization and infection control.
  • Operates and understands sterilizers and sterilizing techniques to produce sterile packages for surgical use; maintains aseptic package assembly and monitors sterilization regularly using chemical and biological indicators and integrators.
  • Documents all activities within outlined processes and reports variances that may affect sterile products or patient safety.
  • Identifies and resolves infection control issues in and around transport of biological materials; uses universal precautions and correct PPE; ensures sterile product identification.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of operation and testing of washers, disinfectors, steam, and hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilizers, and other facility equipment.
  • Identifies surgical instrumentation by specialty (General, Gynecological, Robotic, ENT, Orthopedics, Neurological, Vascular, Obstetrical, Urological, etc.); tests functionality, and assists in assembly/disassembly per manufacturer instructions.
  • Participates in ongoing educational and competency verification opportunities.
  • Participates in orientation of new staff and students as assigned.
  • Participates in the continuing development of personnel in the Operating Room.
  • On-call availability as scheduled and within department time frames.

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED (required)
Required Licensing & Certifications
  • One of the following is required:
    Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST), Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) (required)
