The Control Systems Technician – supports the installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and startup of instrumentation and control systems. This role includes basic PLC and SCADA programming exposure, participation in field startup and commissioning, and coordination with engineers, operators, and project managers while developing foundational technical expertise in industrial automation systems.
Key Duties And Essential Functions- Execute safe and accurate installation, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electronic and electromechanical control systems, instrumentation, and associated power systems in accordance with established standards and procedures.
- Perform loop checks, I/O verification, and functional testing in support of system startup, commissioning, and turnover to operations.
- Perform PLC and SCADA programming tasks under supervision, including:
- PLC Logic development and approved modifications, I/O mapping and signal validation, Alarm configuration and testing
- Performs Operator Interface Terminal (OIT) application development and basic-level SCADA screen configuration
- System testing and simulation support
- Participate actively in field startup and commissioning activities, coordinating with engineers, project managers, and plant personnel to execute approved control strategies.
- Diagnose and resolve routine PLC, instrumentation, and SCADA issues, escalating complex programming or system architecture issues as required.
- Maintain, revise, and support control panels, programmable controllers, and related I/O equipment, ensuring proper configuration, labeling, and documentation.
- Diagnose and support industrial communication systems, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/RTU, serial communications, and radio telemetry systems.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of radio telemetry systems, including basic radio propagation concepts such as line-of-sight, antenna placement, signal strength, and interference.
- Coordinate with operators, mechanics, engineers, and supervisors to resolve instrumentation, control, and SCADA issues, maintaining proactive communication regarding ongoing and upcoming work.
- Support remote engineering teams during system upgrades or modifications by providing field verification, programming validation, and operational feedback.
- Monitor system performance and collaborate with plant personnel to identify basic process improvement and automation optimization opportunities.
- Prepare clear and accurate technical documentation, including service reports, calibration records, startup checklists, and control system modification summaries.
- Follow established procedures for documenting instrumentation and control activities, including maintenance logs and regulatory-related records.
- Actively pursue continuing education, including PLC and SCADA software development training and entry-level certifications, to support career progression.
- Uphold all CITI safety protocols and always maintain compliance with OSHA and local safety requirements.
- Associate’s Degree in Electronics, Instrumentation, Industrial Automation, or related technical field preferred.
- Minimum five (5) years of combined education and experience in instrumentation, control systems, or industrial maintenance, with foundational knowledge of PLCs, SCADA systems, industrial communications, and a strong commitment to professional development, including pursuit of ISA CCST Level 1 certification.
- Familiarity with PLCs, SCADA systems (Wonderware, or Ignition), and common fieldbus protocols.
- Experience with loop calibration tools (Fluke), multimeters, and handheld HART communicators.
