Structural Engineer (Mid-level) – Greenville, South Carolina
As part of the Greenville, SC Water Design Center's Structural Group, the Mid-Level Structural Engineer will be responsible for assisting in the development of Structural Designs in support of various Water Business Line projects. This includes structural support for a variety of water and wastewater projects, with the majority of assignments related to developing structural designs for new water and wastewater treatment plants or improvements to existing facilities.
The required structural support shall include developing detailed drawings and specifications as needed for each project. This will consist of developing detailed structural designs for water and wastewater treatment process basins, chemical facilities, site retaining walls, preparation of design calculations, coordination with other support discipline activities, coordination with regional offices and regulating agencies, construction cost estimating, and quality assurance and control.
The Structural Engineer will also assist the Group Leader in coordinating schedules, monitoring budgets, and ensuring delivery of quality work products which adhere to Garver standardization.
- Be technically competent in aspects of structural engineering.
- Work with a team of multi-disciplined project engineers, design engineers, and BIM Technicians in the development of construction plans and specifications for water and wastewater treatment plant projects.
- Work on multiple projects concurrently.
- Assist in the development of project budgets including the development of detailed project instructions, scope of work, level of effort, and associated man-hour estimates.
- Be responsible for time management and work product quality.
- Keep accurate and up-to-date project accounting on all assigned projects.
- Conduct written and oral project reporting for clients and team leader. Reporting will include project design status, upcoming milestones, project accounting, percent completes, progress reports, etc.
- Assist in the preparation and execution of Quality Assurance and Quality Control Plans for water and wastewater treatment projects.
- Assist with internal and external project workshops.
- Be responsible for continuing education and learning based on project needs, as well as overall needs of the team.
The Structural Engineer must have a strong knowledge base of engineering principles including concrete, steel, and masonry design. Knowledge of the provisions of the International Building Code and its referenced material codes is preferred. Candidates must have strong technical problem solving and critical thinking skills, be self-motivated, enjoy team-oriented work, and have good oral and written communications. Candidates must have a basic understanding of the multi-discipline practices required for the implementation of infrastructure capital improvements, and strong communications skills to assist project teams and maintain internal client relationships.
Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook is expected. Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or Micro Station is preferred. Candidates must also have a basic knowledge of finite element modeling using plates and frame elements.
Some travel may be required, as projects may require field work for site assessment of project locations and support during construction.
Water Design Center (WDC)Staffed with multi-disciplined engineers, scientists, designers, and technicians, the WDC provides high-performance teams for technical expertise in all project areas to successfully deliver sound solutions and customized quality designs. The WDC was created to bring together every unique discipline necessary to design custom solutions for water and wastewater treatment facilities and related infrastructure, including civil, environmental, process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, controls, construction, applications, and operations.
Requirements- Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- 2+ years of technical experience in structural design engineering
- Basic understanding of structural engineering design in concrete, masonry, and structural steel
- EIT or ability to obtain a PE registration with 2 years
- Master's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Registration as a PE or willingness to take the NCEES Professional Engineer exam within 2 years
- Working knowledge of Revit CAD programs
- Structural complexities associated with water and wastewater treatment equipment
- Experience working with a multi-disciplinary team comprising process, structural, building mechanical, electrical, and Instrumentation and control disciplines
