Organizational Unit Overview

The Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Education (EMSE) department is one of four departments within the College of Education. EMSE offers undergraduate and graduate programs, including a Bachelor of Science K-6 licensure program and a Master of Arts in Education in Elementary Education with a master’s level K-6 elementary teaching license. The department also provides two certificates for candidates obtaining an elementary residency license in North Carolina: the post‑baccalaureate Teacher Licensure in Elementary Education Certificate and the graduate Teacher Licensure in Elementary

Education:

Advanced Certificate.

Concentrations for the MAEd in Elementary Education include Academically and Intellectually Gifted, Advanced Content Pedagogy, Teacher Leadership, and Teaching Children in Poverty. Additionally, a Teaching Children in Poverty graduate certificate program, Teacher Leadership graduate certificate program, and Academically Gifted add‑on license and graduate certificate are available. Faculty in the department engage in regular collaboration and leadership with the shared goal of producing quality teachers.

Job Duties

The Department of Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Education (EMSE) at East Carolina University (ECU) is seeking applicants for one tenure‑track, nine‑month, full‑time, elementary education faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in elementary education. The position begins August 2026. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.

Responsibilities include teaching a variety of undergraduate and/or graduate Elementary Education courses in face‑to‑face, online, and/or hybrid formats; teaching undergraduate and/or graduate residency courses; supervising practicum and/or internship experiences; building connections to local schools; and collaborating within the department and across the college to strengthen course and program alignment.

Responsibilities also include engaging in scholarly research and grant‑writing, presenting at professional conferences, and collaborating with colleagues to strengthen research‑to‑practice within the program.

The faculty member is expected to engage in appropriate professional service to the department, college, university, local schools, and to the education profession. Contingent upon available funding.

Qualifications

An earned doctorate in elementary education or a related field (including but not limited to curriculum and instruction, teacher education, or educational leadership). Three years or more of K‑6 teaching experience.…
