General Statement or Primary Purpose
Responsible for the operation of vehicles and for the safe and orderly transportation of passengers to and from their destination. Work includes completion of daily walk-around inspections of vehicles, fueling, maintaining interior and exterior cleanliness of vehicle, maintaining accurate trip records, assisting passengers as required, radio communications, and any other related duties as assigned. Must be willing to assist with emergency operations and emergency evacuations.
Reports to the Transportation Director.
Duties and Responsibilities or Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Responsible for driving a van or bus over a scheduled route to transport individuals to and from human service organizations, work sites, educational institutions, medical facilities, grocery or drug stores, health and fitness facilities and other desired locations.
Inspects the vehicle daily prior to beginning route and follows a prescribed checklist in reviewing the vehicle's operational and safety features.
Records all repair needs/problems on checklist and reports findings requiring immediate attention to the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor.
Completes check of all fluids and maintains proper level.
Washes and cleans vehicle inside and outside.
Keeps the vehicle clean and notifies management of any maintenance issues.
Maintains accurate daily trip logs and provides necessary data for accounting system as required.
Completes all records daily and follows reporting procedures as required.
Receives and accounts for all fares as collected daily.
Uses sound judgment in following dispatch instructions, being able to recognize, create, and follow logical sequences for pickup and drop-off of passengers in an efficient manner.
Keeps regular contact by radio with dispatcher (or phone if radio system is not operating) and reports any service disruptions as appropriate.
Uses correct FCC procedures and observes radio courtesy.
Observes all traffic laws, especially those related to public transportation.
Ensures that all passengers wear seat belts and follow safety regulations.
Attends training classes and successfully completes each. Training will include, but not limited to, CPR, first aid, substance abuse awareness, special needs assistance techniques, and driving skills.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs any related work as required or any other work as requested by the County Manager, Deputy County Manager, or County Commissioner, Transportation Coordinator, Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, Administrative Assistant or Dispatcher/Scheduler.
Minimum Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid North Carolina driver's license required and good driving record with the ability to obtain CDL. Must meet requirements of MA-2910 and MA-3550 for Non-Emergency Transportation as outlined in the NC Medicaid Manual.
Special Requirements
All Pitt Area Transit Drivers are required to be eligible to provide Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) to Medicaid recipients. In compliance with Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) Policies MA-2910 and MA-3550 of the NC Medicaid Manual, drivers must not have any more than two chargeable accidents or moving violations in the past three years, nor a driver's license suspension or revocation within the past five years.
Additionally, drivers must satisfy the criminal background check requirements as provided in Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) Policies MA-2910 and MA-3550.
