Position SummaryThe BOM (Bill of Materials) Specialist – Upholstery & Sewing is responsible for the accurate creation, maintenance, and management of Bills of Materials related to upholstered seating products. This role plays a critical part in ensuring production accuracy, cost control, material availability, and smooth interdepartmental communication across Engineering, Upholstery, Sewing, Cutting, Purchasing, Inventory, and Production teams.
The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of upholstery construction, sewing operations, fabric and foam usage, trims, and subcomponents used in upholstered furniture manufacturing. Attention to detail, process discipline, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally are essential to success in this role.
Key ResponsibilitiesBill of Materials (BOM) Development & Maintenance
- Create, review, and maintain detailed Bills of Materials for upholstered seating products, including but not limited to:
- Fabrics and vinyls
- Foam (seat, back, arms, headrests)
- Upholstery kits and cut parts
- Hardware, frames, and subassemblies
- Packaging and labeling requirements
- Ensure BOM accuracy for all upholstery and sewing-related components prior to production release.
- Update BOMs promptly to reflect engineering changes, material substitutions, design revisions, or process improvements.
- Maintain revision control and document change history to ensure traceability.
Upholstery & Sewing Process Support
- Collaborate closely with Upholstery and Sewing departments to validate material usage, yields, and labor assumptions.
- Verify fabric consumption, cutting layouts, seam allowances, and sewing operations to ensure BOM quantities align with real-world production.
- Support new product introductions (NPI) by building BOMs from initial specifications through pilot runs and full production.
- Assist with troubleshooting production issues related to material shortages, incorrect components, or BOM discrepancies.
- Serve as a key point of contact between Engineering, Production, Upholstery, Sewing, Purchasing, Inventory Control, and Quality.
- Communicate BOM updates, changes, and corrections clearly and proactively to all impacted departments.
- Participate in cross-functional meetings to align BOM data with production schedules, material planning, and cost targets.
- Work with Purchasing to ensure materials listed on BOMs are correctly sourced, costed, and available.
Data Accuracy & Systems Management
- Enter and maintain BOM data within the company’s ERP/MRP system with a high degree of accuracy.
- Audit BOMs regularly to identify errors, redundancies, or opportunities for standardization.
- Support inventory accuracy by ensuring BOM quantities align with usage and minimize waste or shortages.
- Assist in cost roll-ups by ensuring accurate material quantities and specifications are reflected in BOMs.
- Identify opportunities to streamline BOM creation, revision processes, and documentation standards.
- Support lean manufacturing initiatives by improving material efficiency and reducing rework caused by BOM errors.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, documentation standards, and quality requirements.
- Support audits and internal reviews related to materials, production accuracy, and cost control.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in BOM management within a manufacturing environment, preferably upholstered furniture.
- Strong working knowledge of upholstery and sewing processes, materials, and terminology.
- Experience with ERP/MRP systems and BOM structures.
- High attention to detail with strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively across departments and production levels.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and basic data analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Direct hands-on experience in upholstery, sewing, cutting, or furniture production.
- Experience supporting new product launches or engineering change processes.
- Understanding of cost accounting and material cost roll-ups.
