ECU’s Department of Physician Assistant Studies is a 27‑month, master‑level curriculum and is accredited by the ARC‑PA. It is one of eight departments in the College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS) and is in a state‑of‑the‑art building on the health science campus in Greenville, NC, along with the College of Nursing and the Laupus Medical Library. The College of Allied Health Sciences is the first and largest college of allied health sciences in North Carolina and graduates the most allied health professionals for the state.
The College has a strong working relationship with the ECU Brody School of Medicine, ECU College of Nursing, the East Carolina Heart Institute, ECU Department of Family Medicine, and the School of Dental Medicine. East Carolina University (27,000 students) is an integral part of ECU Health, the regional medical center that serves 29 counties.
ECU is located in Greenville, NC, which is the cultural, educational, medical, and economic center of Eastern NC. The Greenville/Pitt County area has a population of approximately 175,000 and offers a family‑oriented community with abundant outdoor and sports opportunities. It is 45 miles from I‑95 and just over an hour from the capital city of Raleigh, with coastal attractions such as Emerald Isle, the Outer Banks, and Wilmington easily accessible for day trips.

The Principal Faculty‑Medical Director is a member of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies faculty (rank commensurate with experience). The position is 1.0 FTE split between 0.8 FTE as Principal Faculty and 0.2 FTE as Medical Director. The Medical Director supports the Program Director in ensuring that didactic instruction and/or supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs) meet current practice standards for the PA role in providing patient care.
The Medical Director is responsible for active involvement in developing the program mission statement; providing teaching and instruction; evaluating student performance; designing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating curriculum; and evaluating the program to ensure adherence to ARC‑PA accreditation standards. The Medical Director is instrumental in ensuring that students consistently meet the program’s Student Learning Outcomes to achieve the competencies required for PA practice.
The Medical Director also participates in activities that promote the stature of the department throughout the institution.
Medical Director Role
- Provides continuous, competent, and evidence‑based medical guidance for the clinically related program components so that both didactic and supervised practicum instruction meet current acceptable standards.
- Assists the program faculty with ongoing review of all Physician Assistant Program curriculum phases and continuous self‑study.
- Serves as an advocate for the program within the ECU Health and community systems to promote the PA profession and encourage increased utilization of PAs within the healthcare community.
- Assists in clinical site development and clinical site monitoring as needed by the Clinical Education Team.
- Participates in accreditation activities, as well as ongoing program evaluation, including review of the program’s mission, vision, program goals, competencies, and outcomes.
