The Assistant Plant Manager (APM) reports to the Plant Manager and manages all plant personnel, ensuring safety, environmental compliance, and production goals at a poultry litter/biomass-fired power plant. This role requires extensive knowledge of operations and maintenance of a biomass-fired boiler, its ancillary equipment, and the turbine generator set.
Work Environment: Typically spends 50% of the time in an operations field environment and may need to work outside in inclement weather.
Possible Work Hazards: May be exposed to allergens, dust, fumes, toxic and caustic chemicals; rotating machinery, high pressure, hot or cold temperatures, slippery surfaces, water, and electrical hazards.

Standing 25%, Sitting 50%, Walking 25%. Must lift or move up to 50 pounds, use ladders or stairs, and periodically stoop, kneel, or crouch for confined space entry.
During the role, employees will perform frequent verbal, electronic, and written communication with all levels of personnel, utilize plant control systems (CMMs, Ignition, DCS, PLC), solve complex operational problems, monitor pressures, temperatures, and fuel consumption, and enforce Lock Out Tag Out procedures.
Scope & Responsibilities- Communicate plant status and personnel matters clearly with junior and senior personnel.
- Collaborate closely with the Plant Manager.
- Input data into plant CMMs (Fix) and Ignition systems.
- Evaluate and maintain proper operation of all machinery.
- Coordinate maintenance activities efficiently.
- Serve as a trainer, mentor, and coach for junior subordinates.
- Adhere strictly to Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) program.
- Follow standard practices and refer to operation and service manuals.
- Operate distributed control systems (DCS) and PLC systems efficiently.
- Resolve complex operational issues promptly.
- Record pressures, temperatures, and fuel consumption.
- Identify and inform relevant personnel of maintenance-required symptoms.
- Ensure safe operating conditions and take corrective action when necessary.
- Obtain a certification to wear a full-face respirator if required.
- Promote work safety procedures and report or rectify unsafe conditions.
- Collaborate within a team environment and follow management instructions.
- Maintain punctuality and readiness to begin shifts at designated times.
- Work scheduled or unscheduled overtime, as required.
- Work holidays, nights, and weekends.
- Interface diplomatically with employees and the public.
- Hear and understand audible alarms and detect changes in noise levels of rotating equipment.
- BS Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or 7+ years’ experience in a solid‑fueled or biomass power plant with increasing responsibility.
- Extensive hands‑on experience in operation and maintenance of steam generators and solid fuel boilers.
- Certification or ability to obtain a full-face respirator.
- Proficiency reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, manuals, drawings, and procedures.
- Ability to interpret and react to alarm management systems.
- Knowledge of maintaining daily plant logs.
- Familiarity with distributed control systems (DCS) and human‑machine interfaces (HMI).
- Proficient in MS Office, MS Teams, MS Word, and MS Excel.
- Experience with sound safety practices using hand tools and power equipment.
- Flexible to work various shift assignments to support plant operations.
- Ability to lift heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs.) and carry materials up and down.
- Training on boiler/turbine DCS controls.
- General power plant heat transfer theory and fluid flow training.
- Training in preventative maintenance and best practices.
