Organizational Unit Overview: The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is dedicated to the discovery, development, and promotion of biomedical knowledge involving cell biology and the anatomical sciences. We aim to improve human health through innovative educational programs and excellence in research. The Department also aims to foster a dynamic and varied learning community. The Department is located in the Brody Medical Sciences Building on the Health Science Campus of East Carolina University.
Our faculty are actively involved in research areas that include cellular metabolism, reproductive biology, muscle biology, and neuroscience. The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology also has an active role in training graduate students. Our former students now hold prestigious postdoctoral, faculty, and professional positions throughout the world. In addition to our graduate program, we provide instruction to medical, nursing, physical therapy, and physician assistant students.

The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) at East Carolina University (ECU) seeks a 12-month, full-time, fixed-term faculty member at the Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor level to support medical and graduate education. This is a three-year non-tenure track, fixed-term appointment with the possibility of a subsequent three-to-five-year renewable contract. The educational focus of the department includes a significant contribution to teaching and administration in the BSOM M.D. program, as well as teaching and administering graduate-level courses in the M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Biomedical Sciences at BSOM, and in the Doctorate of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) program in the School of Dental Medicine.
50%Laboratory Teaching
- Develop and deliver materials related to both lecture and cadaveric laboratory sessions in Medical Gross Anatomy and embryology.
- Contribute to and enhance the departmental educational mission with responsibility for teaching students enrolled in other health professional programs, primarily in human gross anatomy (including cadaveric dissection)
- Contribute to departmental, school, and institutional professional service (i.e., serving on departmental, school, or institutional committees and/or task forces)
The rank and distribution of activities in teaching and service will depend upon the qualifications and previous teaching experience of the individual recruited to the position. The faculty member will have the opportunity to participate in collaborative intradepartmental and interdepartmental research activities.

Minimum Education /ExperienceCandidates will have a Ph.D., M.D.,
D.Sc., D.M.D., or D.D.S. in Anatomy or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Demonstrated experience using virtual anatomy and/or histology educational platforms for instruction or course development.
- Proven experience performing human cadaveric dissections in an academic or laboratory setting.
- Documented experience teaching human gross anatomy at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level.
