Key Responsibility

  • Performs recycling/trash collections across campus
  • Services include electronic waste collection containers, hard-back book collection containers, special bulky waste pickups across campus, scrap metal trailers, and auxiliary waste collection containers across campus autonomously.
  • Crushes 30yd open top dumpster materials with backhoe and coordinates emptying with Environmental Specialist.
  • Organizes and delivers recyclables to various markets in the region utilizing forklifts, dump trailers, dump trucks, and box trucks.
  • Empties trash and recycling outdoor walkway containers across campus via Routes provided by Environmental Specialist - ensures trash and recycling materials are separated properly, removes overflow materials to keep walkway containers clean and ready to accept material.
  • Monitors e-waste collection sites across campus - maintains site cleanliness, removes items from bins, and consolidates them into palletized containers for vendor pickup or market delivery
  • Monitors dumpster capacity – when the 8yd dumpsters or 30yd open top dumpsters across campus are at capacity, the materials are crushed or relocated to another dumpster for later emptying by the hauling contractor. Removes items from the dumpster that are banned from NC Landfills.
  • Special event and work order request assistance - Sets up and collects special event waste collection containers as needed. Assess need for additional containers and delivers in a timely manner, removes full containers and empties them independently.

Vehicle and Equipment Operation, Inspection, and Maintenance

  • Performs daily DOT vehicle inspections. Performs immediate maintenance needs such as adding fluids or adjusting tire pressure. Immediately reports to supervisor any safety concerns, mechanical problems, need for repairs, parts, or further attention.
  • Transports vehicles and equipment to and from repair shops as needed.
  • Inspects and maintains container locations for cleanliness and correct labels. During the summer months, containers should be power-washed as needed. Reports any deficiencies or problems to the supervisor. Repairs broken containers as directed by the supervisor.
  • Completes monthly PM service that includes basic lubrication of compactor grease fittings.
  • Always keeps the work area and vehicles clean and organized. Empties truck contents every week and washes out compactor body in wash bay.
  • Reports the need for repairs, parts, or supplies to the supervisor.

Surveys and prepares trash/recycle collection areas for crew or contractor service

  • Prioritizes tasks to be completed after daily inspections of key waste collection areas at the beginning of the shift.
  • Ready chute containers for contractor pickup.
  • Replace broken casters on chute containers as needed.
  • Operates small trucks and equipment necessary to complete work assignments.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for campus compactors and trash chutes – keep compactors and chutes operational, clean, and ready for contractor service. Troubleshoot problems with compactors and chutes to prevent and fix operational issues. Communicates directly with crew or contractor regarding servicing needs.
  • Perform regular spot checks of Trash/Recycle collection areas.

Customer Service

  • Respectfully identifies, listens, and responds to customer needs (in order of priority) in assigned work areas.
  • Responds calmly to people under stress or expressing displeasure.
  • Uses interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with and understand needs expressed by individuals from a variety of cultures and with limited English language skills.
  • Identifies ways to minimize material being sent for landfill disposal and maximize recycling revenues from collected materials. This position is expected to work during peak periods of activity, such as Move-In during August and Move-Out during April and May. Other activities require weekend or evening work. Emergencies may require working odd shifts or split shifts.
