- Hourly Employment:
Roster positions are paid hourly and do not include benefits such as medical, dental, or vision insurance, life insurance, paid leave, or paid holidays. - Limited
Hours:
Roster employees may work up to, but no more than, 1,000 hours in a 12‑month period. - Pension System:
Roster positions are not eligible for membership in the city’s pension system.

About the RoleAs a Laborer on the Solid Waste & Recycling Team, you will perform the duties of a solid waste helper under the direct supervision of an experienced Solid Waste & Recycling Operator. The selected candidate will also be trained on how to safely unload the material to a disposal, transfer, or recycling facility.
The employee in this position is expected to perform the following tasks: servicing trash/recycle containers, service bulk items and yard waste, immediately report all unsafe situations or service‑related issues to their route supervisor, attend and participate in training programs, briefings, and meetings as required by the route supervisor, communicate customer requests to the route supervisor, and leave the customer’s location clean and free of debris, and perform duties as scheduled by the route supervisor and assist other drivers to meet customer needs as needed.
If the applicant has a valid NC driver’s license, they will perform the duties of a solid waste helper while obtaining their Commercial Driving Permit and completing the training to be a Solid Waste & Recycling Driver/Operator. During the training period, the roster employee will learn how to safely operate heavy‑duty trucks utilized for the collection of residential household and yard waste or recyclable material.
Employee will also be trained on how to safely transport the material to a disposal, transfer, or recycling facility. The roster employee will also be coached and evaluated on how to safely maneuver a vehicle in residential environments, high traffic and congested roadways, driveways, alleyways, and lots.
To be successful as a residential driver, the selected employee is expected to perform the following tasks: operate the truck in accordance with the City of Greensboro Safety requirements as well as all local, state, and federal laws, conduct pre‑ and post‑trip inspections of their truck and document checks using standard DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report). Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- or an equivalence of no high school diploma, but .4 years of related experience or training
- Valid Class C NC Driver's License
