The City of Greensboro's Department of Transportation seeks a motivated and safety-conscious professional to join our Traffic Operations team. As a Traffic Signal Technician, you will help ensure the safe and efficient operation of traffic signals and control systems across the city. The job selection process allows for the selection of a candidate at either the Traffic Signal Technician 1, Traffic Signal Technician II, or Traffic Signal Technician III position based on your experience and education.
This is an excellent opportunity for Traffic Signal Technicians at a variety of levels to build their skill set, take on increasing responsibilities, and progress upwards as a Traffic Signal Technician. The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, experience working with the community, knowledge of the basics of electricity, and the ability to understand and interpret technical documents and signal plans.

About the Role:
As a Traffic Signal Technician, you will participate in the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signals and other traffic control devices.
Your core responsibilities will include:
- Installing and maintaining traffic signal hardware (signal heads, poles, conduit, wiring)
- Maintaining electronic control equipment, communication systems, message signs, and CCTV cameras
- Performing preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and emergency repairs
- Operating test equipment, aerial lift trucks, construction equipment, and power tools
- Working in outdoor environments including inclement weather, high traffic areas, and around live electricity
- Performing physically demanding tasks including lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders up to 10 feet, stooping, bending, and overhead reaching
- This is a hands-on, safety-focused position that is essential to keeping Greensboro moving safely and efficiently.
This job is Non-Exempt and is subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Qualifications
What You Bring:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma/GED with experience in the Traffic Signal, Electrical, Electronics, or Utility Construction industry (e.g., electrician, technician, equipment operator)
- "OR" No High School Diploma with 3 years of experience in the Traffic Signal, Electrical, Electronics, or Utility Construction industry (e.g., electrician, technician, equipment operator)
- Valid Driver's License
- Ability to obtain a NC Class B Commercial Driver's License with Air Brake Endorsement within 6 months of hire
- Work Zone Safety Certification (IMSA - International Municipal Signal Association)
- IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level 1 Certification
- IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Level 2 Certification
- Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License
