About the Role

The City Attorney’s Office is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Sr. Assistant City Attorney to perform a wide variety of legal assignments ranging from basic to highly complex. This role is designed for a seasoned municipal attorney who thrives in a fast-paced, high-impact environment and is motivated by public service, leadership, and professional excellence.
This role will require the attorney to have significant experience in civil litigation, municipal law and experience practicing in state and federal courts.

This position is typically filled through advancement from the Assistant City Attorney level; however, candidates with equivalent outside experience in municipal or related public-sector law are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must have thorough knowledge of state and federal constitutional and statutory provisions relating to municipalities; knowledge of judicial procedures and rules of evidence; knowledge of applicable civil law and contract law; ability to draft and finalize complex legal documents; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and demonstrated leadership and staff supervision abilities.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting advanced legal research and analysis
  • Preparing, reviewing, and finalizing complex legal documents
  • Managing and litigating difficult and sensitive legal matters
  • Handling multiple projects, assignments, and cases concurrently
  • Providing legal guidance on municipal operations and policy
  • Supervising Assistant City Attorneys, paralegals, and support staff
  • Providing training and subject-matter expertise to legal staff
  • Working independently with limited supervision while exercising sound judgment

What You Bring

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD)
    with 7 to 9 years of related legal experience, including civil litigation
  • Active license to practice law in the State of North Carolina
  • Admission to practice in Federal Court
    , "OR" eligibility to obtain admission within 2 months period established timeframe
  • Valid Driver’s License

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in municipal or public-sector law
  • Litigation experience involving complex civil matters
  • Prior supervisory or mentoring experience
  • Experience managing high-profile or sensitive cases
  • Experience advising elected officials or senior leadership
