Solar Project Engineer Internship (Utility-Scale Construction)
This immersive, eight‑week internship is designed to give students hands‑on experience across the full lifecycle of a utility‑scale solar project. Interns work directly in the field alongside experienced Site Engineers and Assistant Project Managers, gaining real‑world exposure that bridges classroom learning with large‑scale construction execution. This is a boots‑on‑the‑ground experience focused on safety, quality, and project delivery.
Position OverviewThe Solar Project Engineer Intern will support site leadership during the construction of a multi‑megawatt solar facility. This is not a desk‑based role. Interns will be embedded on‑site, contributing to field engineering, quality control, safety initiatives, and project coordination while learning how utility‑scale solar projects are built from the ground up.
Internship TypePaid Internship. Internship is also eligible for per diem.
What You’ll Do- Safety & Site Operations
- Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) reviews
- Support a strong safety‑first culture on an active construction site
- Field & Technical Engineering
- Assist with interpreting civil, structural, and electrical plan sets
- Support pile installation, racking systems, module installation, and DC/AC systems
- Track production logs and assist with quality inspections
- Quality & Compliance
- Conduct Quality Assurance (QA) inspections using digital checklists
- Help identify and document non‑conformance issues with guidance from QC leads
- Project Controls & Management
- Support daily progress reporting, RFIs, and submittals
- Gain exposure to schedules, cost controls, and critical path concepts
- Capstone Project
- Identify a site‑level process improvement or safety opportunity
- Deliver a final presentation to site leadership at the end of the internship
- Currently enrolled as a Junior or Senior in:
- Construction Management
- Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering
- Interest in renewable energy and large‑scale construction
- Comfortable working outdoors in a fast‑paced field environment
- Strong problem‑solving mindset and willingness to learn
- Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, Bluebeam, or Procore is a plus
- Hands‑on experience on a utility‑scale solar construction site
- Direct mentorship from Project Managers, Engineers, and Superintendents
- Exposure to safety leadership, quality management, and field engineering
- Resume‑ready deliverables, including a capstone presentation
- Priority consideration for future full‑time Project Engineer roles for top performers
