Purpose:

The Lennon Distinguished Professor in Epidemiology is a prestigious academic appointment in the Department of Animal Sciences within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University. This role is established to attract a visionary and accomplished leader in the specialized field of Epidemiology—a vital discipline within human and animal public health focusing on disease surveillance, prevention, and control within populations.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Drive impactful interdisciplinary research on disease emergence, transmission dynamics, and public health implications.
  • Instrumental in advancing the department’s teaching and curriculum related to animal health, disease and related areas.
  • Support the development of an interdisciplinary graduate certificate in One Health, part of the department’s strategic plan, and significantly contribute to preparing students for critical careers in animal health, public health, government, research, and academia.
  • Act as a cornerstone in advancing the university’s mission of excellence in teaching, research, and outreach and address global challenges at the animal-human-environment interface.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Academic

    Qualifications:

    A DVM/Ph.D. or Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Veterinary Public Health, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Status: Eligible for appointment as a full professor with tenure at North Carolina A&T State University, with a nationally recognized record of exemplary scholarly achievement, including peer-reviewed publications, research leadership, and external funding success.
  • Research and Teaching

    Experience:

    • Demonstrated excellence in leading impactful, externally funded research programs in veterinary epidemiology or related areas.
    • A history of teaching and mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in epidemiology, public health, or veterinary science.
    • Experience with interdisciplinary research and a commitment to the One Health approach.
  • Preferred Years of Experience, Skills, Training,

    Education:

    At least 10 years of post-doctoral academic or research experience, including experience in a tenured faculty role and preferably in a leadership or administrative capacity.
  • Skills and Expertise:
    • Expertise in veterinary disease modeling, outbreak investigations, and surveillance systems.
    • Experience with One Health initiatives and collaborations with medical, environmental, and public health sectors.
    • Proven success in securing grants from USDA, NIH, CDC, or related agencies.
    • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to collaborate across disciplines and with community and industry stakeholders.
  • Certification (Preferred): Board certification in veterinary preventive medicine or epidemiology (e.g., ACVPM). Highly desirable.
  • Work Arrangement: On-site. Employees are primarily in the office and/or have a critical job requirement that requires dedicated office space on-site. This position may be eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies.
