General Description

The teacher is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the operation of programs for a specific group of children, providing a high-quality environment in which each child achieves the highest level of social, emotional, physical, and intellectual competence. Ensure the classroom environment is age-appropriate and meets all HS and licensing standards (Infant Toddler and Early Childhood Environmental Rating Scale — ITERS/ECERS).

Maintain a clean classroom environment, including sweeping throughout the day, wiping up spills as needed, removing trash and vacuuming classroom rugs as needed.

An Early Head Start teacher should demonstrate competency to perform the following functions:

  • Planning and implementing learning experiences that advance the intellectual and physical development of children, including readiness for school by developing literacy, phonemic awareness, language use, vocabulary, appreciation of books, and early math and science, problem-solving abilities, and approaches to learning.
  • Establishing and maintaining a clean, safe, healthy learning environment.
  • Supporting the social and emotional development of children.
  • Encouraging the involvement of families in a Head Start program and supporting relationships between children and families.
  • Bus monitoring duties as assigned; the bus monitor supports students during transport, loading, and unloading the school bus to ensure safety of all passengers.
  • Participate in after-hours family engagement and enrichment activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Organize and use space, materials, and routines to create an interesting, secure, and enjoyable environment that encourages play, exploration, and learning.
  • Develop and implement an integrated program of activities and opportunities appropriate to the developmental levels of the children served.
  • Use available community resources and age-appropriate activities to enrich the classroom experience.
  • Ensure the classroom reflects the diverse backgrounds and learning styles of each child.
  • Create and maintain an environment in adherence to HSPS and ECERS.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as assigned.
Teacher-Child Interaction
  • Maintain a clean and organized learning environment.
  • Maintain effective communication with children to foster physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development.
  • Use questioning, probing and problem solving to promote learning.
  • Interact with children at their eye level with a pleasant and encouraging voice.
  • Provide opportunities for verbal and non-verbal expression of thoughts and feelings.
  • Participate with children in small and large groups and individually.
  • Use conflict resolution techniques appropriate to the child’s developmental level.
  • Provide smooth transitions between activities without unnecessary waiting.
  • Assist children with self-help activities.
Adult-Adult Interaction
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with coworkers through open communication, resource sharing, and professional development.
  • Develop supportive relationships with parents by respecting their child-rearing values and sharing information about development.
  • Maintain a cooperative workplace atmosphere with a pleasant, cooperative attitude.
Assessment
  • Observe and assess each child in each developmental area using an assessment instrument selected by the Education Committee.
  • Participate in IEP staffing and cross-component team meetings to develop strategies for promoting optimal development.
Parent Involvement
  • Communicate program activities to parents regularly (e.g., newsletters and calendars).
  • Conduct and document parent conferences and/or home visits as needed or required.
  • Orient parents to the classroom and attend parent group functions.
  • Communicate expectations and opportunities for positive parental involvement in the program.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with parents.
