JOB PURPOSE:Greensboro Day School seeks an experienced learning support educator for a full-time Middle School Learning Support Coordinator position for the school year.
The Middle School Learning Support Coordinator collaborates and consults with faculty, administration, and Learning Support colleagues in supporting students in Grades 5-8 with diagnosed learning differences as well as students who may need enrichment or remediation. The Learning Support Coordinator serves as a liaison between classroom teachers and families and can help families connect with community resources. They understand the range of learning differences students exhibit, and they remain current on brain research and associated effective teaching and learning strategies.
The Learning Support Coordinator also develops, organizes, promotes, and carries out both proactive and responsive professional development, parent education, and community events in the area of learning support.
This is a 10-month, on-campus position, five days per week, Monday through Friday, and requires regular evening and weekend work.
The Middle School Learning Support Coordinator models the GDS Community Cornerstones of Respect, Kindness, Integrity, and Responsibility.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:Ensures appropriate accommodations and modifications are made for the growth and development of students in accordance with the Student Accommodations policy in the GDS Family Handbook
Develops learning plans for students who have diagnosed learning differences, medical accommodations needs, or mental health accommodations needs
Works one-on-one, in pairs, or in small groups with students who have diagnosed learning differences (or other diagnoses when working in conjunction with the Nurse or Counselor) that impact achievement
Visits classrooms to work with small groups for remediation or enrichment as necessary
Addresses student reading, math, and writing skills based on information from teachers or testing
Creates and maintains a database of all students with a psychological educational evaluation that includes their learning plan
Observes students who do not have psychological educational reports in order to assess student needs
In collaboration with the classroom teachers, develops and implements appropriate support for students that may include specific curriculum, charts, forms, or other aids to help assigned students learn classroom material addressing learning strategies, study skills, developmental issues, executive function systems, and other identified learning profile needs
Plans and executes lessons, using varied methods of instruction and assessment, that are in accordance with the School’s mission, Statement of Community, educational philosophy, and departmental curriculum and competencies
Provides a safe, nurturing, caring educational environment in which every student sees the learning support coordinator as an ally and accessible advisor in the student’s quest to succeed
In collaboration with the classroom teachers, communicates in a timely manner with parents to inform them of progress and/or challenges in the classroom and in the school more generally
Attends conferences with parents and/or teachers as requested
Completes quarterly comments for all students with diagnoses with 70 or below.
Ahead of major testing and assessment dates, communicates with students and families about extended time and other accommodations
Provides support to the tutoring program
Stays abreast of current brain, learning differences, and pedagogical research
Participates as a member of the Student Support Team
Participates in the Professional Growth and Development Program focusing on Planning and Preparation, Instruction, Classroom Environment, and Professional Responsibilities (Danielson Framework) as outlined in the Employee Handbook where applicable
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:In conjunction with other members of the Learning Support Department, plans, organizes, and leads various professional development experiences for faculty and parent education programs
