Overview

In collaboration with the Laboratory Senior Director and under the medical direction of a qualified pathologist (MD), the laboratory manager is responsible for the administrative operation of the laboratories; assisting with or maintenance of all policies, procedures, and quality control practices; the management and supervision of the laboratory technical, clerical, and environmental staff; the administration of the department budget; and the maintenance of effective physician and inter/intradepartmental relations.

The Manager works collaboratively with and is a peer to the managers of Baystate Medical Center core lab clinical and anatomic pathology laboratories to meet system objectives and the needs of laboratory clients and their patients.

The Manager has the following responsibilities: direct oversight of the community hospital assigned to, including direct supervision of the technical lead, staff, and phlebotomists that may be at the site. This Manager may serve as the General Supervisor for testing performed on site. The incumbent is a member of the Clinical Services team and the BH Laboratory Leadership team. Incumbent reports to the Senior Director, Laboratory Services.

Reporting directly to the incumbent may be supervisors, clinical section leads, technologists, technicians, phlebotomists, lab assistants, and clerical staff in their respective area(s). At the direction of the BH Senior Laboratory Director, develop and prepare goals and objectives which support the BH mission, principles, and goals. Coordinate department orientation with new employees. Assist and/or conduct employee performance appraisals and payroll.

Oversee department QA programs. Uses critical thinking skills and independent judgment to make departmental decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in the Clinical Services and Laboratory Leadership teams.
  • Report to the Senior Director, Laboratory Services; supervise and coordinate with department staff (supervisors, section leads, technologists, technicians, phlebotomists, lab assistants, clerical staff).
  • Develop goals and objectives aligned with Baystate Health mission and goals.
  • Coordinate new-employee orientation; assist with performance appraisals and payroll; administer corrective actions as needed.
  • Oversee quality assurance programs and exercise independent judgment in departmental decisions.

Compensation and Schedule

Full Time / 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday. Minimum – Midpoint – Maximum pay ranges: $ – $ – $.

The compensation range represents base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. New hires may start lower within the range; actual salaries vary by relevant experience. Base pay is shown; benefits and incentives are separate.
